Freelancer -- All it Could''ve Been?

Hello, some of you may remember me. I posted here pretty frequently back in the days before the release. I, like most of you, was very excited about Freelancer, I bought the game soon after it's release, hell, I even won a Freelancer shirt.

Anyway, it's been half a year since its release (approximatly), and I am somewhat dissapointed with Freelancer. This is not saying the game is not fun, no, it is most certainly a fun game. But it's no Privateer descendant, that much is certain. Sure you can buy new ships, traders, fighters, etc, but they all feel the same to me. The random mission generator is a little lacking, all destroy this or that pirate.

Remember in Privateer? Remeber the mercenaries' guild? The trader's guild? Remember the random missions wanting us to fly to some distant world to deliever precious cargo, and running illegal goods past a military blockade?

Perhaps I was expecting too much from Freelancer, or I have let the nostalgia for Privateer grow too deep, but Freelancer was not what I was hoping for.

Freelancer, I had no expectations, and although there are a couple of little irks I think it's a hell of a game. It's not Privateer (have not played it), it's Freelancer. With no disrespect intended to the origionator of this posting, why do people insist on coming on what is essentially a fan site and posting complaints .. it is what it is and sure there are things people would like to see in sequels but no amount of what ifs will change the original. Stop looking for things it's missing and embrace what it does have.

If you throw enough mud ..some's gonna stick.

You are entirely correct, and I did say that Freelancer is a fun game. But back in its conception when Chris Roberts was at the helm it appeared like it would be the new Privateer. Anyway I recently reinstalled FL and am having some fun with the mods.

I'm not complaining, but am rather just voicing my thoughts.

I'm not all that I could have been. Why should I expect a game to be.

True, but they stated early on in production what the game would be capable of and it didn't even live up to half of what they said.

A m8 showed me the game, and I was hooked instantly, and I never played Privateer... 'nuff said...

I love the assaults on bases, take those every time!

@sir spectre - I didn't know that, do you know of a link where I can read the original proposals?

I agree freelancer could have been much more than it is, but its still one hell of a game to me. I've never played privateer, but I don't think you should compare the two...

Zippy, I think you are right. Privateer has much more game play than FL. But then FL didn't have MP. Also the graphics are gorgeous compared to previous Wing Commander series games from which FL is descended. As it is it's a good start.

Spectre, few things live up to hype. But it should have been expected, look who owns DA?

I think Ajim said it best. I, too, hope in the future FL comes up better. The mods people are creating give a glimpse of it's potential.

I feel this is rather unfair. Without MS, there wouldn't be any Freelancer AT ALL!

There is really nothing wrong with compare Freelancer to Privateer, which is a true classic published exactly 10 years ago. For all of you who have never tried it, you should. The atmosphere in Freelancer is a little lacking, at least the planetside of things are. That said, Freelancer is still one of the best game of its genre out there among everything on offer.
