Questions about being a Merchant:

Hey,

I was curious, I noticed that all the missions that I get from just about everywhere are of search and destroy nature.

I was wondering, since Freelancer has a commerce system, if there were any "merchant" type missions. If so, where, and do I need to have a freighter ship in order to "unlock" these type missions? Or I was also wondering if being a "merchant" was profitable. Has anyone done this, or recommend any strategies?? Or is it just a matter of buying certain goods at one place and then selling them at another.

I was just curious as to how some players have approached this, or if it is even feasable.

You kinda answer your own questions there.

The missions are all you get.

- kill/capture guy
- distroy base
- distroy/loot commodity

that's it.

As for the merchant part, it's basically buy and sell at different places. All set prices.
There are some great traderoutes out there, you just have to find them
for trading, consider buying a freighter.

You can also earn your living as a fighter. Do some missions. In some systems the missions pay big bucks and the loot you get from the kills gives you a good deal also.

have fun!

No merchant type missions.

And being a merchant is just buying things in one place, transporting them to another place, and selling them.

I think the kinds of merchant missions he is talking about would be like the following example:

Liberty Navy needs Toxic waste for the Battleship Missouri. So it puts out a contract for 100 units of Toxic waste at 50 dollars a unit.

If you accept the contract, it would be up to you to buy the goods somewhere and bring them to the Missouri.

I wonder if missions like this could be modded into the game?

Thanks for the replies. I was just curious as to what is out there. I've never flown anything but a fighter, so I was wondering if I had a freighter some different quests would come up.

I've seen a few people standing around w/ the briefcase icon while at a commodity trader in the kusairi (sp?) system, but neglected to click on them to see what jobs they had to offer. So I thought maybe there were some different missions out there. Perhaps I'll look again sometime.

ever played Elite before: it is just the same. Try to take along some basic supplies for planets and check the traderoutes. Then you can create your own trade-routes. When you are planning to do some missions in a system you can combine that in trading in the same system. You never are out of money. If you ever out of money get a job and kill some fighters tractor in the loot and keep it with you until it sells well on a place or you have accumulated enough to make a profit

Mission can differ though: 1)kill fighters 2) deliver boss guy to policebase after tracter him 3) destroying countraband 4)destroy small bases 5) destroy weapons installations 6) destroy small bases, weapons installations and fighters (some jobs include help from the party that ask you)

When selling loot or killing jobs your experience (level) will raise too but also when you are on way to system X and your tradelane is disrupted by "ennemies" (red) ; the pilots you kill can give you also a small boost in points / worth

I found a real good tradelade between Kingston station (Manchester Jumpgate) and Cortez jumpgate (the planet with water C.): buy at 410 credits per ton worth of fuel and sell it in C. for 510 per ton. But there may be more tradelanes that offer more Credits...

Privateer II was fun in that it had some merchant escort missions. You had to keep your ships from being blown up on their way to their destination. Plus you did trading of your own. That would have been fun in FL, but probably would have taken more than the single CD in the game allows.

Escorts might be a mod idea to consider.

you can still do escorts in FL : just join a freighter and his escorts and go wherever they go.. but it is limited

Yes, once a frieghter convoy leaves the system it just simply dissappers. Considering how often they fly into planets I assume they also fly into the walls around the jump tunnel. makes you wonder how any of the houses manage to do any kind of business at all.

If you know what goods to buy and sell, being a merchant can get you rich.....fast. I built a profile using a Dromedary. It didn't take long. Some of my best runs are:

Diamonds: Kautzen Base, Dresden to Planet New Tokyo. (1,650 credits per unit)

Eng. Components: Buy at New Tokyo after delivering diamonds and take them to Mactan Base in Magellan or Montezuma Base in Cortez. (1,450 credits/unit)

Gold: Anywhere in Dublin to Tripoli Shipyard in Omicron Gamma (1,540/unit)

Gate/Lane Parts: Pueblo Staion, Colorado to Tau-31 Gate Construction Site in Tau-23. (1,400/unit)

Running Niobium from the Tau systems to Leipzig Station in Dresden is worth 1,600 credits per unit.

These are the best money makers although there are some others. Just be sure to be sure you're friendly or at least neutral with some of the criminals on some of these routes.
