Scale on Freelancer

Obviously nothing is actually to scale (planets are bigger than stars on the nav map), but ignoring that, does anybody have any rough estimates on distances or possible scales?

Though the game actually says metres etc. that can't be an actual distance as Earth to the sun is 1.5m x 10^11 but Manhattan to the New York star is less than 100km.

Yes, the scailing is retarded... A real life gas giant would take up whole system in Fl!! But I dont know the scale used.Ahh, it dont really matter...

the speed is also a little strange...

cruise speed is lesser the mach 1

If u c some1 in a defender make fireballs from hunter it can be me

about the speed-their measure of a meter is obviously retarded too-cruise speed is probably 1000m/s but a "meter" in fl is...well....big

who says it's meters? Maybe it's a new form of measurement that happens to also go by a scale of 10 (like kilo-parsects or something). Furthermore, if the distances where right, it's take 3 hours of flying just to reach pittsburgh for the first mission. You want to spend your time flying arround, that's fine. I think the distances get the job done, screw accuracy. Besides, have you measured the distance to the sun? So, how do you know what it is?--- RR16

Whoever came up with "Mission Commision" should be lined up and shot

For scale they did mess up, but if you want better scale (which FreeLancer is not advertised as being accurate, they probably used travel time as the guage) You might want to try First Encounters from the Elite Series, at least Sol system is very accurate and if you choose to hang around Sol system you can get to know the near stars pretty intimately. The Elite Series is pretty dated and they still have the same FAQ for Elite 4 that they had 2 years ago (sigh).

Considering all they want to put in I understand the time it's taking, but all morsels are equally dated.

yeah the scale of elite certainly made the whole game feel a lot larger than it actually was....which was a good thing....but at the same time, freelancer's scale (no matter how innacurate) allows speedy game play and fast navigation.

I think that this is how the 2 games differ the most....and certainly something that both software houses should consider if there is ever an elite 4 or fl2. But saying that, I like the scale of FL as it is. Its not elite, but hey, nobody's perfect!

also, to be honest, I don't think gamers nowadays would have the patience and sheer endurance to stick with a full scale game like elite - I'm not being rude - but elite came out in the days when you had to wait 3 hours for your game to load (after adjusting the volume on your tape deck several times)...even I have trouble nowadays with the scale of elite and when I was a kid I made elite status on 2 platforms which involved quite literally YEARS of my life.

personally i think that reducing the scale speeds up the game play, leaves lots of room for funky anomalies and fits in perfectly with the busy schedule of 21st century life....who cares if its not accurate

Someone should make a small hack that times everything by 1000.

Post Tue Sep 30, 2003 7:58 am

from my limited (read LIMITED) knowledge of modding that wouldnt be simple as you'd have to actually change the physical location of everything by 1000... maybe if u could change the labels of m and K then something could be done

Sometimes the glass is half full, other times its half empty. Usually its just twice as big as it really needs to be
