This is a free discussion forum on Freelancer. This is the place to discuss Freelancer issues NOT covered by the other boards!

I have ANOTHER potentially unpopular proposal, but what the

How about we all just agree on an unofficial rule or two...

1: The moderators here are NOT idiots, and they can see when a thread needs closing or deleting. Therefore, I propose that we all simply STOP posting things like "Mods, please close this!" or "Can we have a click, please?" or somesuch. If a mod sees your post about a thread, he's READING the damn thread, and can see for himself whether or not it's appropriate.

2: I agree that there is a spam problem here, but guys, come on... posting whining comments about such and such being spam is, in itself, spam. You're not helping. Sure, there were a half a dozen new threads this week about "Freelancer 2", or even "Freelancer 3" (which, by the way, was a really big help there, Puke... that definitely reduced the amount of irrelevant threads on the forum.... not), all of which clearly had gotten out of hand... but you know what? Again, we have mods here, they're on the job, and they know what they're doing. So, this brings me to my next proposition: if you're displeased with a thread, again, leave it to the mods. Don't feel obligated to post negative comments about every thread that displeases you. You're just adding to the clutter if you do.

In reading those two propositions, I guess they're fairly similar, except that the first deals with telling the mods how to do their jobs, and the second deals with whining in general.

I'm just trying to find solutions here - I like this place, but there's WAY too much negativity going on here, and I think it's ruining the place.

Hey! That gives me an even better idea!! Never mind those first two proposals, I think THIS is all we need -

"IF YOU CAN'T SAY ANYTHING NICE, DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL!"

I like it.

Mods, please close this! Can we have a click, please?

On a slightly more serious note this is a good idea. Click requests are a trivial problem but they do contribute to spam.

Here on TLR, the only paramteters I've managed to discern for what is spam and what is not is this:

"Anything posted by another person may be referred to by spam at anyone's discretion."

With such a nebulous definition, the term 'spam' then loses all meaning and, as such, is pointless to point out everything that is spam because EVERYTHING is then spam.

If you can't read this, then you're probably illiterate and have no idea what I'm saying anyway.

@lethallarry - the best thing I like about your suggestion is the idea of trying to reduce the amount of negative comments.

"Why can't we all just get along?"

I'm willing to bet that the amount of spam and negative comments would be greatly reduced if the majority of the community simply stopped responding to them at all. Don't tell people when something is inappropriate or suggest that a moderator lock a thread. Simply don't respond at all. Every basic human desire is based on some form of reaction from someone or something else. If there is no reaction, people tend to stop such behavior.

The sad thing is, this type of behavior work is usually done on 5 year olds. The fact that we need the same treatment says something. I think society in general is far too quick to judge, insult, reprimand and respond in anger, and far too slow to build up, comliment, support and respond in kindness.

There's my Mr. Roger's moment for you. I like your idea lethallarry.

Well, the funny thing is that I don't encounter this kinda problem on any of the other forums I frequent, just here... I suspect it started as an isolated bad attitude in one or two users, and became a social norm. That's just my theory - I have no data, so it's just supposition. The point I'm trying to make, however, is that such behavior is more along the lines of a bad habit, rather than a social endemic... it can be changed with a change of the values in the given environment.

I guess to make the proposed solution a more global coverage (in the case of TLR), is that we should all agree to simply stop pestering the Mods. No asking for clicks, bans, etc, as I said before, but I'd like to add to that that we also don't gripe about anything that they DO do - I've been annoyed a couple of times about threads they locked, which I didn't think was necessary... but I've also posted things that caused them to lock threads, which, in retrospect, I really couldn't blame them for.

So: We don't ask them to take actions, and we leave them alone when they do take actions. They're smart enough to do their jobs, so let's just leave them to it. And occasionally we'll all get together and give them a group hug - if they don't run too fast.

Applause!!!!!!! I am fairly new to this sight. I agree with the negitivity problem. In order for this sight to grow and expand, it needs new players and fresh ideas. Shooting down or "flaming" new people needs to stop.

When he or she finds something new to them in the game and wants to share it, let them. If its been posted before, so what. let them know in a friendly way. If you bash them, they are not going to post again, for fear of embarresment.

Simple terms..... You are the owner of a business that sells a product.
How far will you get without new clients?

You just described my last week... I'm the owner of a business that manufactures gardening products, and I spent the last week at a trade show here in Vancouver drumming up new business. Are you stalking me or something?

How about we also make an unofficial rule where we can all make fun of the mods?
