Question for players about mods.

Hello all.

Mr Moderator, please leave this post in this forum, its for players not mod makers. Thank thee

Players:

Q) When mod makers release mods, how much sense does the endless list of features make to you on the LR news screen ?

Do you find them.

1) Helpful
2) Boring.
3) Confusioning and tells you nothing about the mod ?

Q) What sort of info about a mod you see released would you really want in a news post ?

1) Techy stuff about the mod.
2) A basic, what its all about.
3) A detailed what its all about.

The way i see it, all mod makers (including me) are guilty of treating players like mod makers when they post news about a mod. So help us make it easy for you and tell us the sort of info you'd want to see in a mod release announcement.

HUv8 is just about ready for release and thats why I am asking. It has so many features now that listing them all would make a boring read.

What is the fun of having even 100 features in a mod when all of them are listed for you to go, see, and check off like a checklist? Most should be able to be found out by the player.
Some may even be secret, the details of which would be treated like spoilers, and only found out by serious player investigation. If Freelancer had all its bases, secrets, and missions listed on the box, I wouldn't buy it; it would no longer have been "Free".
Maybe a mod description should have a teaser or two, a lead in the right direction for other unmentioned features, an indication of how expansive it is, and a general description of the theme which it follows.

And God said,

And there was light.

I'm playing your v7.1 right now. I liked your discription for that mod. An idea of what has been changed and added without giving away all the suprise's.

I understand it is for Players, but it is still for MOD-Players, and should go in the Announcment forum or similar. There are way to many MOD questions in this forums as it is, but I'll let this thread live against my normal instincts...

I've got my chainsaw and soldering iron packed Nickless. Who should i start on??

But so far gisk you have been doing a great job. Enough info to tantalise, yet not too much to spoil.

Just my $0.02, but it could just be the cardamine talking.
Violence isn't my only option. Its just what I do best.

Sorry Bargib.

I needed players to answer some questions the to be brutually honest, most dont read the mod annouce forum and those that do tend to be other mod makers looking for juicy features. The mod makers answers would not be the same as the average players.

So that respect the answers would be useless to me if this post was made in the mod announce forum. Hense the location of the thread.

Sorry if this disrupted this forum too much, as you know i dont make a habbit of this. However your appearance in a thread does alarm me some what. I had made a big effort not to promote the mod and only mention it in order to explain what info is needed for.

I am now totally confused as to what sort of mod info players and mod makers can talk about in this forum. Mainly because if this posts offends the moderators in any way, then my replying to player questions about HU a few weeks ago in this forum would warrent a warning or two. Yet none was recieved. Hense the confusion.

Sorry, I dont mean to be too critical but I am getting mixed messages here. I didnt use this forum very often until recently so im not entirely aware of whats transpired before hand and the Mod forums have so many off topic posts, especially in the tutorial forum that I honested didnt expect this forums rules would be so strict over this issue.

Please accept my appologuise and concerns as a player and mod maker.

I prefer a graduated list of features. not three, but four sections, with the first covering basic features, the second covering greater detail, the third covering techy detail, and the fourth covering a list of changes from the last patch in a somewhat generalized notation (added this ship, moved this jumphole to 'somewhere' else (not specified) etc.)

In my experience, people will read from top to bottom until they are out of their depth, so scaling the list from top to bottom does the trick.

Just did a quick check of the other forums and I think I see the problem.

There is no general mod chat forum if mod chat is not allowed in this forum. Mod announce is not really good description for idle chat about mods and wouldnt intially be seen as a general mod chat forum by site visitors.

Sorry, I thought i missed something other than the announce forum, wouldnt be the first time but it appears i didnt.

If had seen a mod chat forum I would have used it in preference to this one. Announce would not have even crossed my mind for a post of this kind and I sure many others wouldnt consider it either.

I've got a really stupid reply and I know I'm going to get flamed for it, but what are u talking about ... I see MODs mentioned everywhere so I thought I'd swallow my pride and ask.... also IRRC I see a lot, what is that?

If you throw enough mud ..some's gonna stick.

I think it's helpful to get a synopsis of what the mod is about and what you need to use it because that gives you an idea of whether it'll appeal to you and what you'll need to run it.

Personally and i'm a player not a modder I find that most of the posts regarding the mods have been good, not too long and not too technical. Plus most of them only include a small amount of info on the mod and leave the detailed descriptions to the text files included in the download.

Using something like FLMM1.2 the process of installing and activating these mods is much easier and credit is well deserved for the people who created it and those that make their mods compatible with it for the rest of us players who aren't modders.

I guess this forum needs more moderation than the mod forums do
