Descent: Freespace & Freespace 2, I liked them because of two reasons, besides the ones everyone else has already mentioned. #1. was that they got me into space sims, and the like, and actually computer gaming in general. #2. Most games, for me, have barely any replay value, yeah maybe some novelty crap like in the GTA series, you can still go around and kill stuff or whatever., but in FS there was only the campaign, and I myself have played it ~40 times through, not counting all the simulator missions and such, I've been decorated with so many medals it isn't even funny, and for a game to last that long on my "fun" list is.... well... not easily achieved, the only other game to get that close to as high as FS2 was Max Payne (just the part where you fight Jack Lupino, I have his stuf memorized: I have tasted the flesh of fallen angels... I have tasted the devils green blood, it runs in my veins, I have seen be... okay, I'll stop now) followed by FFVII and Metal Gear Solid 1(yes 1, not 2). I mean, the atmosphere of that game is amazing, it really shows you how small you are with a Sathanis and a Colossus are fighting it out, and your told to make bombing runs, like a real squad would, not like in FL on the last mission with the nomads ( where you and Alpha have to take out the shield generators) and I'm sitting there hammering away them it while my squad does lazy circles in the air, I mean wtf, honestly. Don't get me wrong, for what FL was it was a good game, an excellent game for those who simply enjoy cruising around in space, which includes me to some extent. So, in conclusion, I would definately reccomend, even in this day and age, Freespace/Freespace 2 over Freelancer.
BTW: the SF Dragon pwnz you.
