How does the Dromedary stack up?

This time around, I want to check out the Borderworlds frieghter, which I think is one of the coolest ships in the game (I'm on my second play-through), but I'd like to know if I'm going to be able to finish the campaign with it, or if it's bulky freighterness will only get me killed in the story missions.

The dromedary has the most cargo capability and it is much more manuverable than the Humpback.

I know there are some guys who completed the game in a freighter, so it's possible.

The Dromedary most certainly can finish the campaign missions, and I found it a lot of fun to do so. The Drom can actually pack more firepower than any other ship you can get (excluding torpedoes) since it can fire forwards with 7 hardpoints and the fighters are limited to 6.

It's also quite neat to play as a merchant as you go through the campaign. With that massive cargo hold, you can buy and sell stuff all over the place. Even without making freelance trips you can make a fortune if you know the right cargo to take at each step of the campaign missions.

T-Hawk, minor quibble: the Anubis has the most firepower. 7 forward-firing weapons (6 guns slots + 1 forward-firing turret, all class 6) with a powerplant capacity of 4000. Plus torpedo launcher, of course.

The Drom has the same powerplant as the Drake (capacity 2900) so you have to place your shots carefully, but the Drom can utilize the energy much better than the Drake. Since it has so many weapon mounts it can easily spare two for shield busters without sacrificing too much of the punch against hull armour.

I have a fancy for freighters, and the Drom caught my eye immediately. However, I was not able to obtain it easily because I was enemies with the Lane Hackers (the only ones who sell it) Plus, I was past the single player campaign and fighting tougher enemies, so the Drom's stats just wouldn't be able to cut it. So I decided to make a mod for the Drom. I should have it available in the next few days if you guys want it. here are some of the changes I have been making:

The Drom is a good choice when carrying perishable cargo, since you can lose 15-20 units and still make more money than if you used the Humper or something else. It's also fairly maneuverable for a freighter, making it superior for runs through the border worlds or anywhere else where someone is less than friendly.

All in all, it's situation dependant. It's the approximate equal of the Humper; each one has it's advantages and disadvantages.

Reaper: $200,000,000.
Rockets: $100,000

I will have to get me a drom.

I got a humpback.

It flies like a cow .. a bloated cow.

I would rather do trade runs in a VHF at 70 cargo slots than fly a bloated cow.

Then you're no fan of the Titan either?

Without any doubt the Dromedary is the best freighter in the game. Its fire power and cargo handling can turn in a fast buck with the right trade routes. After flying the SP and bar missions I bribed my way into the Lane Hackers to buy the Drom. Made over 15 mil bought a Sabre and a Titan (and kept the Anubis). Since the game does not allow you to keep all the better ships I saved a game for each of the before mentioned vessels into seperate missions doing pirating, trading, and police work. Once you accomulate enough credits with the Dom all your ships will have more than enough money to wage your campaings. Death to the Red Hessians!

You know why the Humpback is called thus? Because it moves like a beached whale.

I've made over half a million in ONE SINGLE RUN with the Dromedary: Bring Aliens Organisms from Ruiz Base (Omicron Beta- 100 credits per cargo hold) to Cambridge Research Station (orbiting Planet Cambridge-Cambridge System. They will buy the for 2000 credits per cargo hold!) Profit per cargo hold: 1900 credits. Just remember that this cargo will perish over time. Just take the jumpgate from Omicron Beta -> Omicron Alpha. 5 k from that jumppoint there is a jumphole -> Omicron Theta.
- Omicron Theta -> Omega 41
- Omega 41 -> Omega 5
- Omega 5 -> Cambridge jumphole.

Just be neutral towards Outcasts and preferrably towards Corsairs AND Red Hessians.

Nice perishable return-trip: Buying Luxury Food on Planet Cambridge and selling them to the Spa and Cruise ship Hawaï in Sigma 19.

These are my opinions:
VS: AI
Freighters are made for freighting, not fighting.
Every second spent fighting, causes profit margins to become slimmer. Time is money.
A skilled pilot will escape all AI enemies, wether he be in a Humpback, Drom, or Rhino. In this case the largest cargo hold wins. Therefor: Drom
A less skilled pilot needs more manueverability to escape. In this case the drom wins.
A completely unskilled pilot does not effectively use manueverability. Therefor the Humpback wins in this case.

VS: PK'ing fighters
All freighters are no match for a fighter of class 6 or higher.
Escape is the only option. Escape is easier with manueverability, therefore the Drom wins.

VS: Other freighters:
Open season. Pick a style and use it. Slow turning CAN be overcome with the proper strategy. I'd give the edge to the drom, but I don't believe it's completely an open and shut case.

Gung-Ho has the right idea for truckin...

I would add tho, I believe that the drom can turn faster that the Titan.
Normally I WILL not engage ANYone, AI or not, in my Drom (or any freighter)
but a couple weeks ago, out at Crete not hauling anything at that moment..

I took down another smartass player in a titan with my Drom..

Yes - took down a Titan with a Drom... couldn't believe it but I did. hehehhee

Drop a couple rippers out the back while you're running. That'll shut just about anyone up for a while. Especially if they're stupid.
