What''s so Greatttttt about this game?

Hi all,

What is so great about this game? am not so impressed yet. I play it on SP only, too many damm cheaters Online. This game is always same boring thing happening. Taking a job, a little fighting here and there, mission accomplish and docking. always same pattern, over and over again. Or maybe I don't understand the game. BTW what all those mods that changes the real nature of this game, in my books are cheats. If a mod is made to improve the game, like sounds, graphics, etc, I figure that they are good mods. But creating mods that change config of your ships, too give the edge over the game AI, in my book it's call cheats. Well that's my point of view anyway.

If you don't like the game, get a mod. And no, not a cheat, a mod. Not all mods make you superior over the AI. In fact, there are many mods which make the game more difficult. Try the Rebalance mod, for example.

To maswastage/BG,

Well I might try it of course. For now I play only SP, so I have seen so many mods on this website that am all confuse, what too take or not. What am looking for, is some mods that would enhance my gameplay, fixes some bugs, or inprove graphics and sound, etc.

Thank you,

Depends on what you like. For me, it's the freedom to do what you want. You can go off exploring, be a good guy or bad guy, then go back to the main missions whenever you want. I got my first computer in 1985 and loved playing ELITE on it, the game that is the ancestor of Freelancer. Unlike all the other games at the time, you could do what you wanted to do! You had a whole universe to explore.

Then came along the Wing Commander type games, where you had to do exactly what you were told to do -- or fail the mission and maybe the game. Some people love being told what to do. I don't. I'm a born rebel, and Freelancer lets me do whatever I want.

Now admittedly there is plenty of room for improvement, especially in those non-story line missions -- which are basically just the same thing over and over again. But I'm not doing them anymore. I'm exploring the Sirius system and trying to find everything there is out there. I have to juggle my reputation with the factions to be able to do that. And that is fun, for me anyway.

And how does doing the same thing over again differ from any other game??

Quake/Unreal/Doom/Jedi Knight : Run around and shoot things.
Age of Empires/Heroes/Warlords/C&C : Scroll your screen around and tell unit to go long and kill things.
Myst/Riven/Exile : Explore the world and solve puzzles.

Yes, games can be improved upon to make them more open and have lots more to do, but lets face the facts. In order to do so requires lots more coding, lots more time, and as a result, the cost and install size of said game will expand exponentially.

At least with Freelancer you have a bit of choice: Trade? Fight? Good guy or bad guy?

Just my $0.02, but it could just be the cardamine talking.
