Cycling through large ship components?

So i'm in a big firefight. There's a big battleship I want to take out quickly, so rather than just pounding it with topedoes i want to hit specific locations, liek the engine for example. But everyone's shooting all around me so I don't want to have to turn off mouselook or move down to try and find the exact component I want to destroy and click on it in the ship wireframe model window.

Most other space sim games have had some key mapped to 'cycle cap ship components' or something similar, which just cycles through the various guns, engine, bridge etc on a capital ship. Is there something similar in Freelancer, or do I actually have to try and make sense of the wireframe model and find the component I want to destroy while in a huge fight?

nope. No such thing, I'm afraid. Not that it matters, as the damage isn't area specific (meaning that if you shoot at a Battleships Reactor Core, it will do the same amount of damage if you shot at it's armored hull sides)

Oh. One of my friends said it was the best way to rob a transport. If you blow it up most of the stuff on it gets destroyed. If you particularly shoot the cargo pods, or maybe if you particularly avoid them (i forget) they fall fo rather than blowing up and you get a lot more stuff. Is that wrong?

King,

Your friend was right...just shoot at the cargo pods on a transport and the goods will drop without taking the ship out. It's fun sometimes to park outside a station and just keep wasting the cargo pods on incoming transports. You can really litter up the space with floating loot in a short while ;-) Happy Hunting!

It is area specific to an extent on many ships. These are the ships with seperate hp values for various components in the shiparch.txt files. For most fighters, this includes irrelavent damage, like wings, tailfins and such. It also includes weapons themselves, shield generators, thrusters and components of that nature. Any component which displays visibly on the ship is vulnerable. Shield gens, weapons, mines, countermeasures etc are vulnerable. Beware if you have one of these shot off: You will lose the weapon if you dock - the best option is often suicide to keep your items.

Of course, you will likely only have the chance to blow off one or two of these components before the hull of the ship caves in. However, a really nasty tactic when a person is afk is to blow off that class 10 weapon they have equipped without killing them, and wait for them to dock for repairs. I've never done this myself (i'd feel too bad even if i didn't like the person), but the possibility is there.

Sorry, double post I know, just testing sig. Seem to be having trouble with it in a couple of forums...

If it wasn't for the inky blackness of the night you wouldn't appreciate the brilliance of the stars... or the little Liberty Rogue ship exploding nicely alongside you.
