Earth & Beyond

Everyone is saying that freelancer is so similar to WC, Elite, Privateer, etc. but i realized that nobody mentioned Earth & Beyond.

For those of you that arent familiar with E&B,it s MMORPG that allows you to be one of three races, and one of 3 professions, flying around in space fighting, trading, and exploring. Although E&B didnt do too well, I played the 5 day demo (full game, just for 5 days) and i thought it was pretty good. After that expired, i got interested more in simulation/rpg gaming and what do you know, FL was the only other one. So i downloa--...Uhhh i mean bought the full version of FL and here i am now.

I just wanted to know anybody else's input on the subject.

I used to be looking forward to E&B but lost interest after a few weeks of waiting. I think it was because I got MGS2 then and completely forgot about it...

i think snake should get into an eagle and help me kill some of those pesky hessians and unioners.

I don't think snake would be a very good fighter pilot

not enough walls to hide behind

Yes; "tactical espionage action" really doesn't work when you're in a spacecraft...

Comparisons are rare because the titles are disparate. Freelancer is a space-simulation; Earth and Beyond is a space-RPG.

In both titles your success or failure, in part, relies on an understanding of various devices, weapons, and ship upgrades. But in Freelancer your skill is shown by savvy with a mouse, while in Earth and Beyond your skill is born from the slow build-up of experience, ala the traditional pen-and-paper RPG.

Both are great games according to their respective audiences, but the most these games have in common is that they're both playable online, and they're both in space. Apples and oranges.

Freelancer is considered a hybrid of simulation AND rpg, as shown in the gamespot review of freelancer.

(sorry the link didnt auto link whatever so you'll just have to copy and paste it into the address bar, but most of you know that )

e&b...........well you gotta pay money for it, and i dont do that. so in MY books it sucks

Its only illegal if you get caught

In your book it sucks because people pay a small, twelve dollar monthly fee to have continuous maintenance, patches and evolving content.

*shrugs* Well, okay.

i tried the 5 day Demo for E&B and really enjoyed it the one thing i didn't like about it was the cost. i no what some ppl say that its not that much money! but when your always skint like me its hard to pay for things like that

Earth and Beyond....I am an avid fan of Earth and beyond and a current playing member....the reason that most people go back to the old dos game references such as Privateer and WingCommander is that Digital Anvil ...the makers of Freelancer are the same orginization that produced the movie WingCommander ...this genre creation was the mind game of a person we in the genre of "space flight simulations in a first person shooter mode " call an Icon, namely Chris Roberts. Those of us that played Dos games in the late 80's, 90's, and now in 2000 remember those first games and the joy Chris Roberts created for us in the seemier side of the galaxy.. the Gemini sector in an area of space called the Troy system. We flew a slow poorly armed relic of a ship that didn't even have an afterburner...we made cargo runs for a time going between the main planet...a mining asteroid station and a security station..we cut our teeth fighting religious zelots...pirates and on occassion the Killrathi. we hauled cargo and books for Oxford planet and delivered Iron to Manufacturing stations and got jobs in the bars of New Detroit. we did space exploration in uncharted systems and discovered jump holes to planets and systems only know to those who dared enter. Most of all we remember Chris ....the inventor of Worlds, Mr. Origin and the maker of the genre we all love today....buy a copy of the movie "WingCommander" and a copy of WingCommander Prophecy and you will have a small glint at what we are talking about....most of us "oldies" have played WingCommander...WingCommander 2...WingCommander 3....WingCommander 4...WingCommander Prophecy.....Privateer....Privateer Rightious Fire...Privateer 2 ....WingCommander Armada....WingCommander Academy to name a few...and we have seen the movie...I also like newcomers like Earth and Beyond...however, I really enjoyed the free flow of the privateer...and quite frankly I didn't see much of that in Freelancer ...not to say it isnt a good game...its as good as any...even as good as Freespace 2, it is a fitting testimony to Chris Roberts...a name as great in this genre as Gene Rodenbury. Now if we can just get a traders guild office with real cargo missions and a bounty hunters Office at most stops and take away the leveling with money as the divider and, I think we should have a charge for landing...a fee. Perhaps we can capture that freeflow of the Privateer...it's not about money Sir, its about me feeding the cost of maintaining this cargo heap, so if you want to catch this hop to New Detroit you'll have to anti up. Hey!..go easy on that cargo you stupid dock Jockey! Thats Furniture headed for Oxford you Clown...they don't put nice books on brocken shelves! Its hard to wash the salt from an old Privateer....Privateers don't fade away they just fly to a less civilized system.
