do you use missiles or only cannons?
I like to use missles and torpeados, which can do quite a lot of damage, like the sunslayer torpeado, it costs a bomb for reloads but its worth it for the 11100 damage it does. I also use cannonbal missiles, usually two of them which do, i think 2000 damage each missile
I find them handy when heading into a group of enemy ships flying directly into me straight ahead, they dont usually move and BOOOM they are dead :p

I don't particularly care for class 10 fighters - not enough variety for me - and have found missiles to be a useful option in almost any lower-level craft. On Frostworks I have currently a Patriot, and mounting missiles on that boat provides a huge boost in firepower that any class three gun just can't match. When paired with shield killers, I've found the Patriot can be quite effective against all kinds of targets, barring, of course, ships carrying high class shields, which a class 3 shieldkiller won't even scratch. Then the missiles run out and my potential damage output is 0.
On Elite I've played for some time with a Centurion, and while missiles are not a good trade off for guns at that level, the torp launcher is certainly helpful for killing Eagles and other VHFs.
Make sure you have loads of cash before you try though.

Missiles are God's gift to newbie pilots right at the start of the game, but in the later stages they tend to be worse than useless. By that point people tend to be hoarding money and feel reluctant to splash out on ammunition after each sortie. On the other hand I rather enjoy watching a missile's trail streak towards an enemy target, and they have proved to be a nice way of finishing a combat if you enjoy impressive finishing moves on annoying targets. Mind you, currently I'm flying a Crusader Heavy Fighter (Called Betty-Lou for some reason...) mounted with 2 x Rippers and 4 x Advanced Rippers, which seem to do the job very nicely...now you mention it, I might mount a nice little missile launcher on it one of these days...it'd compliment the paint-scheme and go with the torpedo launcher quite nicely...I just have to get matching curtains for the windows now ^_^
By the way, does anyone know if it's possible to mount glyphs or symbols on your ship by editing the game files? It'd be nice to put a WWII piccy on the side of the cockpit - it probably isn't possible but I thought I'd ask anyway ^_^ thanks people

We need guns. Big guns. Frickin' BIG guns! In other words, no missiles unless my ship cannot support refiring for a long time. Wait... I use guns even if I can fire only one shot before my power is depleted...
Torpedoes are nice though against those online that refuses to let you go. Just whack away his shields and drop a sunslayer in him and he'll let you go due to serious infection of being-blasted-to-pieces-disease.

I fly with 3 Cerberuses, 1 Tizona del Cid, 1 Sunslayer torpedo launcher and 2 Firestalker missiles. I fidn the missiles extremely useful. Why? Because within few seconds I can destroy my adversary's shields and them treat him with a nice gift of two Firestalkers with most of the time are enough to finish the job. If I'm feeling lucky, and the enemy is right in fron of me I like to hit thrusters and release the Sunslayer with gets the job done everytime. So yeah, I am willing to sacrifice a cannon or two to mount a missile.
I find mines or torpedoes to be the most useful. Primarily because they're the only way to get a high-level weapon on a low-level ship.
But I use missiles when I can.
Reaper: $200,000,000.
Rockets: $100,000
The look on that pilot's face when you launch a full pod of screamers up his tailpipe: priceless
