Well you can pretend to join a guild/faction. Depends how you want to do it for it is more or less just self placed restrictions. I myself have a character who is a member of the Kusari Navy Who flies a drake but has got a better weapon load out then what the Kusari could give me because of his excellent service record. Which is also why he is allowed to fly around without any wingmates.

Now of course this is all just roleplaying, I could easily just get myself a decked out VHF and say he is stilll a member but it just doesn't seem right.
