The one and only freelancer?!?!?!

Did any of you realize that you are the only freelancer in the universe (at least in SP)? I mean do you think that there would be a freelancer 1-2 or 2-1? Everyone belongs to a faction except for you!!! Strange huh.

Maybe that's why they named the game "Freelancer", and not "Freelancers" or something else...

Careful what you wish... You might just get it.

And in MP you can be Freelancer 1-13 or something (but all will be called Trent, which reminds me of matrasses on Squarnshellous Zeta or whatsitcalled). The 'wun desh wun' is just because in SP there is always only one player logged in.

There could have been some mercenaries....though they'd basically stil be freelancers. (what's the difference between a mercenary and a freelancer?)

A mercenary is a soldier for hire, isn't it? A freelancer, on the other hand, doesn't exactly know what they'll do. There'll be time to think about that when the money runs out.

Yes, but in the Freelancer universe, a freelancer and a mercenary would be the same. After all, what else is there to do in Freelancer other that fight (as far as jobs go) It would be interesting to have jobs which require you to trade, or explore. More like a true freelancer. In fact, Trent is more of a Merc than a Freelancer.

Well, Trent can pirate, smuggle, loot, mine or trade if he so desires, and only the first of these activities is combat-oriented.

But as missions go there was a much greater variety in the original Privateer, both bar missions and story missions (I remember mapping unknown systems in Rygannon).

And the story missions in Wing Commander (at least some of them) were better though out so you couldn't just go in with any ship and guns blazing to solve them. As regards FL: I have heard people have beaten the campaign in a Dromedary, and I have taken the Patriot all the way and the Starflier up to mission 9 so far. Basically, any ship you can buy in Kusari space (except Drone) is good enough, and any weapon loadout will do.

At least using one of the really light fighters (Dagger and below) forces you to think about the mission in terms of 'powerplant recharges at x per second which translates to 456 damage/s sustained damage output over time (Starflier), one full load of Slingshots can do about 35000 damage, and the four shield gens have 20000 hitpoints each'.

What about Bounty Hunters, I think they come the closest to being freelancers/mercenaries, because they work the same way as you would when you'd take on a mission.
So you're not completely alone out there
Maybe a mod could insert a freelance faction, or something...

And why are you Alpha 1-1? Why not for example Beta 5-3 or something like that, that would at least sugest there are more freelancers.

I think it wouldn't be to much work for DA to put in a couple of NPC freelancers, and it would make it a bit more interresting, for every freelancer would have a different factionprofile, so you never know what you're gonna get.

Well, maybe MS/DA will see the light some day and actually listen to us...(Add-on/Expansion-pack, please...)

*** To Freelance, or not to Freelance, that is the question ***

i saw that in the pre-release fluff for "X2 - the threat" that you would be a "freelancer" type character amonst other, computer-controlled freelancing characters, each looking to find the best deal for goods being bought and sold etc.... X2 is to have a real dynamic economy, though, so it makes more sense in that environment to have more than one "freelancer". But won't know how this is being implemented til there's a demo or something...
