I just came across this reference to a new game that seems to be in the vein of Freelancer, and it is due out late this year. It appears to be Russian made. Who knows--maybe they will get it right, and include joystick control instead of just lame FPS mouse controls.

I downloaded the E3 trailer. It was OK, but nothing spectacular.
