Auto mode for the countermeasure droppers

I've finished SP a few times over and built up 6 level 38 characters in MP before I discovered it... so I guess a lot of you guys missed it too, might as well pass this very useful tip along.

Most people have their countermeasure dropper uncoupled (de-selected on the lower right display) because if otherwise everytime you press the trigger you waste a decoy, but I just discovered that if your countermeasure dropper is activated, it will drop automatically and react much faster than anybody can. Now I've a key (caplock) tied to it so I can switch it on when I fire up the cruise engine. It hugely decreases the effectiveness of incoming CDs and now I can make routine trips to Freeport 9 in a Starflier!

Are you saying the key used for going to Cruise is the same key that is used to drop a counter measure, so that as soon as you go to cruise a counter measure is dropped?

No... I switch the launcher on manually when I go into cruise mode.

ALternatively, set your guns as "weapons group 1" and your countermeasure as "weapons group 2"

leave them all activated but change fire button to fire weapon group 1. Then you only fire guns when you press fire, and countermeasures drop automatically.

if your lookin to get away- this is kinda a cheap way to do it.. just afterburner and cut the engines at 200- then when your drifting hit cruise.. some reason the ai ships won't fire disruptors and you can fly away without using counters

Also, go to 200, turn 180, and fire. The enemy scatters, and never re-engages.

Nice work. Good to see there are still tricks to be discovered.

Be very handy for those damn gunships....

How do you create "weapon groups"?

Post Mon Jun 02, 2003 1:25 am

I think that my game may be bugged when it comes to grouping. I've tried to do the trick where you set the gun button to 'fire group 1' and the coutermeasures to group 2 and select them both, but for some reason when I click on the countermeasures to be activated, they fire with group 1 even though they're in group 2. Any hints?

You assign weapon groups by selecting the weapons you want in it in your loadout display (bottom right) and then pressing a key (or combination) to assign it to weapon group x. You need to set up the keys for it on the options, i dont think they are assigned by default.

I gave up after a while tho cause the damn thing kept just 'forgetting' the groups and i was constantly reassigning them.
