well, they really extend the life of the game. I played the whole SP through without mods, then tried a few. Going through it again with Slave-1 wasn't challenging enough though, so you might try the rebalancer mod as well. I haven't tried that yet, as I don't really have the time.

I'd only do it if I've done everything I could normaly, then I'd get a mod to play around with it.

I'd push yourself to limits first, then explore a bit, like in my SP game, i did EVERYTHING possible, i visited every base, system, bought every ship, tried every gun, then i just got bored with the originals, thats when i started modding, because after all, how much fun are you going to have if you are just going through the game with guns that do like a bajillion damage and shields that never get damaged, and even after you push yourself, dont start modding like crazy or it will mess up your game, AND NEVER MOD ON THE MP GAME!!!! I HATE MP CHEATERS!!!!!

I'd say, play it unmodded for as long as you can, and when you get bored with it, try modding to make it more interesting. That way, you can get the most out of the game.
