Satelitte Dishes and Stars

When you land on most of the planets you can see satelitte dishes dotted around, but around the planet there are no satellites, only stations, so why have so many satelitte dishes? And where is the star in the Omicron Beta system, there is a planet there, but no star.

maybe its for communication with the docking rings and stations/ ships?
