now it becomes challenging, maybe too much ...

I was due to one SP mission where I met my old friend on Leeds, he suggested to get a new ship down in New London. They sold only Startracker there (IIRC) and since I was not sure if switching from Heavy Defender (with 5/1) to Startracker (4/0) would be actually upgrade or downgrade I kept my H.F. and went wondering to some distant system to (hopefully) find some better ship.
Well, I went through Tau-31, Tau-23 to Tau-37 to finally realize, my "super-duper" Heavy Defender cannot last for more than few seconds when facing 6 to 12 Hammerheads . (Though I can still take out 4 Stilletos ).
Now it becomes challenging, I am in desperate need of better ship, but it seems that all Tau systems are "base only" with no solid ship (except one freighter I met). And the problem is even to return to former systems, meanwhile Juni called ...

Heh,no way can anyone take on 6-12 Bounty hunter very heavy fighters in a Defender.Heh even I tried in a Dragon & that was still pretty tough.

My guess is that you haven't looked through Bretonia space since much of the fighters there are way better than the Defender including one of my favourites the Corsair Legionnaire.Try looking around & dump the Defender.

Yep, you are right. I did not look much in Bretonia, since few shipyards I visit on main bases (Leeds, New London) did not offer anything interesting and I thought it might be, because Bretonia is same "mainstream" as Liberty was (or seemed to be). I thought that I would probably get the better on some remote system, well, it did not turned out exactly that way .
On the other hand, the money from salvaged cargo and weapons from few bounty hunters in Tau-37 easily paid for any repair on my "pile of junk" . Even if I was to almost completely reconstruct it .

IIRC, the ships sold in New London are the same as in Leeds. Two of them are excellent - Piranha and Cavalier, even though the latter looks mighty strange - and the third (Clydesdale) is quite good as well, although you can buy a much better freighter a few minutes later when you reach level 10.

No good fighters in Bretonia????

If you look well you'll find a battleship ("York" orbiting a planet between LD-14 and Glasgow?station. No trade lane there, so put on those cruisers. Anyway, in that battlecruiser the IMO best heavy bretonian fighter "Crusader". It's no dragon or barracuda, but still, for those early levels it's just great. once i made my way with such a crusader through some tau-systems, all kusari-systems to arrive in rheinland where i managed to do some 30000+ missions (still wth the crusader) untill i finally bought a rheinland fighter. That crusader costs about 30000 credits i think...Anyway, it's good alltough it looks stpid IMO, kinda like a fish...

I had to be on something, you were right all, there are better ships than H. Defender in Bretonia. Nevertheless, yesterday, after I post the orig. post here I went for a last attempt to break free from Tau-37 and I made it . Well, I am not sure how it could happen but I did it back from Falkland Base to Tau-23 and from there to Kyushu.
After I emerged in Kyushu (I took jumphole which also "magically" emerged there to save me ) there were something like 10+ Hawks, but apparently I had to develop some skills back in Tau systems, since I was able to last enough to finally got helped by local authorities.
Having been inspired by several posts here about light fighters you can guess, what I am flying now and I must admit it is indeed *a* difference. Riding Heavy Defender was like driving truck now I feel like having much closer touch with surrounding. Heavy Defender also used to loose its equipment very easily. Several times I made it through with bare hull only, with no wings, no CM, no Turret and no missile . For the L.F. I was at first afraid that changing from 5/1 configuration to 4/0 would be in fact loss, now I am happy I did it.
Since I was already carrying bunch of interesting weapons around (not being able to mount them in H.D) I used them now and they also bring some new experience to the fights. I noticed I prefer challenging way when doing my stuff so I mount two Pyros Type 2 (salvaged somewhere) and these two not even look graphically nice, but give some nice punch to enemies too . With those (and two lesser weapons) mounted (I ditched missiles for the preference of guns) the whole route back to Dublin system became quite easy. And when I finally arrived there I was told we are heading to "dangerous" Border World systems - ).
