For new players--key info left out of manual

I've found the FL manual to be shockingly lacking. So I thought it would be good to start a thread with useful hints for new people. Not spoilers, but hints on how to play the game well.

First thing: USE THE "PATROL PATH" FUNCTION ON THE MAP. When I started playing, I struggled with questions like "In general, how do I find pirate bases?" and "In general, how do I locate jump holes?" It's easy, but they don't provide this info in the manual. Switch to your map as you fly around, then switch on the "patrol path" mode. Be sure to check friendly, neutral, and hostile paths. If a bunch of paths converge, you can bet your arse that there's either a base or a jumphole there.

This will save you a LOT of time looking for things that aren't at trade lane intersections.

Anyone else have some useful basic info that was left out of the shoddy manual?

About this, I have never seen any patrol paths being listed as enemy or friendly. They all appear under neutral. Anyone know why?

No, even though I am hostile to Bounty Hunters, Bretonnia Police, Bretonnia Navy, Kishiro Technologies and Daumann Heavy Construction and I am friendly with Liberty Rogues, Universal Shipping, Outcasts, Corsairs, Xenos and Lane Hackers the patrol paths show nothing on friendly and hostile settings.

This happens only in Multiplayer to me btw.

@DaVoid

Are you having the same problem as gus? Or is it possible ur not checking out the hostile/neutral/friendly button?

Personally i think there should have been a 'display all' button on the patrol path bit. Would have saved time buggering about between them to see where stuff was. (no - i dont want the game to install/play itself i just think it was a bit of a hassle switching between them trying to decide where stuff is and i dont think it added anything to the game) (i'm not having a go at DA either) (or microsoft) (or anyone....)
