What do ship mods do?

I loaded the FL demo and loved it and ordered the game. I have some questions about the mods that add ships before I get into a long Single player game.

1. Are these "new" ships really new or are they just a reskin of ships already in the game?

2. Do these mods add to the total number of ships available or do they replace ships already in the game?

Thanks in advance. This looks like a great game.

Ship mods don't add new ships they just change the skins of current ships allthough some of them do other things besides changing the skins I believe.

some ship mods just change the skins of existing ships, others just add a new model and an entirely new ship. Others still add new game mechanics to go with their ship. For example, the Star Wasrs mod ships (at least the ones I've bothered to download) change the "engine-cut" to more of a "hyperdrive"
