1. I somehow doubt ships would last dive-bombing straight down into the atmosphere. If a space shuttle tried that, it would be incinetated immedaly.
2. I will further stress that landing would be rather disorganized without a docking ring.
3. Dude, it's a video game. Name one video game such as Freelancer that makes sense.

Actually, ever notcied how you burn up if you try to land anywhere but the docking ring?

It must be some kind of tunnel through the atmosphere.

Also, don't say "but today's shuttles can land without a magical tunnel", because if the angle or re-entry is too shallow, you bounce off and can't land. If you go in too steep you burn up. And the heat-resistant tiles on shuttles are disposable, and very expensive, so It would be impractical for civvy ships in FL to use them.

Actually, Trent's ship isn't the only one that docks with planets and bases. Havn't you heard the 'entering queue' thing from the docking rings?

Here is the reason for docking rings and it's the same reason the good guys usually win in the end, the bad guys ALWAYS explain their diabolical plot before they try to kill the good guy in some rediculous manner, and the good guy gets the girl at the end of the movie even if he can't speak or acts like a troll.

about the docking rings

many spaceships now have beendestoyed becuase of entering the atmesphere And space craft made today can only leave orbit once what they do is the pilots parachute out were choppers pick the up and what remains of the shuttle crashs into the sea

Also, the title should be "Serrious Logistical Error," since this is dealing with the logistics of the FL universe. I fail to see the psycological aspect of this thread. --- VH16
