different AI in multiplayer?

i just started playing multiplayer, and find it to be not fun. the ships seem to fly a lot smart, and i cannot hit them. at first i figured it was lag, but it doesnt seem to be. it seems they are just smarter, and change the path of flight frequently(2 times a second). as soon i train my guns on them, fire, one hit may land before they are headed at 90 dergees in another way.
is this just me? or is there a difference between single and multiplayer?
thanks

It could partly due to the lag. I experienced it before. Ridiculous teleportation maneuver. 90 degree turning and suddenly ZIP! they're 1k away from you!

yeah it is latency. the latecy causes the wiggling, and little burps in packet transit cause the 1km jumps.

i would really like to contest that this is not a lag issue. i have cable. lag seems to make them warp, not fly eraticly. but i will take yalls word for it

your having cable does not necessarily mean that you don't get latency. as far as i know, cable is shared in a neighborhood (this is old info, i could be way off) and other people's usage could cause this sort of thing. besides, any of the nodes that your packets travel through to get to the server and back could have a burp and cause the erratic behavior. the server could be at fault also. maybe its just that the MP code in Freelancer is not exactly up to par and has issues.

who knows?
