End-to-end Goto?

Perhaps I’m doing something wrong. If I add a “best path” in the map, is there a way to tell Freelancer to run the entire route? Goto only seems to work for the currently selected waypoint, not the entire path.

i.e. I'm in New Berlin and want to go to New Tokyo. I hit F6 and zoom in on New Tokyo, then right-click the docking ring and choose Best Path. I'd like to launch to space and "just get there".

Hope I’m missing something.

You are missing something, sadly, so is everyone else. You gots to goto to every point. It does however make it easier to look around en route, so it's not all bad.

You're no match for m----

Also, while I'm autopiloting my entire route if I get ambushed it should shoot all my enemies for me. Also, it would be nice if when I dock it would automatically repair my ship, sell bad equipment, and upgrade my guns. Also, it would be nice if when I dock I'd automatically fill up on the best commodities and have the quickest route to the best place to sell it mapped out, and automatically launch and start flying there. Also, it would be good if when I put the CD in when I first got it it would pop up a messagebox saying "You had fun playing Freelancer and are The Winner. THE END." and didn't actually install anything, because that would save time and be convenient. Also, I should sell my computer and just watch TV. Also, my TV pisses me off, why can't it just watch itself for me?

AHAHAHAHAH ROFLOL!!!!! AW MAN THAT IS FUNNY!!!! that was a good one sapient!

Is there a mod that would allow you to do the little waypoint thing?

hmm.... i could watch your tv for you. Give me the computer once you throw it out.

Sapient - I don't think this is quite the same. I'm sitting here toggling <f2> <f3> - even in completely friendly or empty space. If there's no event, why should I have to hit this? I see it as a design flaw in the waypoint logic.

I'm in software design. When I see something like this that adds no value, could easily be automated, and doesn't detract from the experience, I see it as something to fix. If you disagree, I'd like to know why. If not, I'll send it in as a feature request for FL2.

if you really want to do that, get in formation with other poeple..

..and I just wonder, where do I buy one of those?...

Look mikedan, this is an attempt to make the universe seem larger and more immersive. By FORCING you to see it all rather than skip it, you get a feel for how large it is.

Take Privateer. The systems were large, but they felt tiny because you flitted from waypoint to waypoint. You still had to hit the autopilot button between waypoints, there were simply less of them.

Frrelancer tries to make the systems much larger and deeper, yet reaches a compromise where immense games like 'X' suffered - they make the systems huge, but they make it possible to traverse quickly if you use the trade lanes.

Of you want to fly it straight between jump holes ala Privateer, you're welcome to kick in the cruise, select the next jump and hit go-to. But you can't skip the scenery or the time.

Well I can see that intent is well-meaning. And if that's the intent it does work - the universe feels bigger. By being more difficult to navigate though. I like the intent but dislike the execution.

I guess I would just prefer a button that says "unless something happens, take me from x to y". Something obviously qualified as trade lane disruption, attack, demand for cargo drop, etc. If I'm in completely friendly space flying a route between bases, I'd like that to be automated.

I see two workarounds:

1. Get into formation with someone going the same way as you (as a previous poster suggested)
2. Instead of using "best route" going directly from point to gate. This cuts down a bit but takes forever as its a cross-country and can't take advantage of the trade lanes.

My current mode of operation:

<f2>, <f3>, rinse, repeat ad nauseum.

I know there are always barneys going on as too how much the game should and shouldnt do for you, and sapient that was pretty funny

However i agree with mikedan on this one, there doesnt really seem to be much gained from the F2, F3 rinse repeat method. Usually i'm just sitting reading a mag till i hear my que to press the next button, occasionally stopping to check the map for goodies.

Realistically what do you think you are forced to see by this method? Loads of space. Obviously if i spot something on the map i go and investigate but apart from that i've been seriously considering training my cat to press the buttons for me. I'll bet half a tonne of luxury goods if there if a FL 2 they change this

Ok, ok. I'll give you a serious response.

I'm rather unsympathetic to the cause because:

1) There seems to be an unending well of posts asking for automatic goto and for turrets that fire automatically. When you add those two feature requests together -- which isn't a stretch at all because often the people asking for one ask for the other -- it reveals a rather obvious pattern that's fun to stretch into the realm of hyperbole.

2) I think having the "goto" feature at all was a mistake. Shouldn't be there. Just an "autopilot" that keeps you flying in the direction you're facing and avoids small obstacles (so you can do things like bring up the nav map while cruising through an asteroid field, which is the only function I ever use goto for in the first place).

But what I'm not really doing here is saying you shouldn't have this feature, just that I'd rather have a useable autopilot that doesn't require any waypoints at all.

Like i said, i thought what you said was funny

I do agree some people want too much done for them and you've got to wonder why they even bother gaming in the first place. Still, you're right the autopilot needs sorting, i'll add it to my FL 2 wishlist....
