Weapon Groupings

Hint from the page:

Use weapon groupings to conserve energy and make your weapon systems more efficient. It is a good idea to group long-range, quick-firing guns together to take down shields or hit targets from a distance. Make a separate group for heavy damage weapons like plasmas, and use them when you're in close. The saved energy will allow you to sustain fire for a longer time.

Can someone explain to me the message of this? I don't seem to inderstand....weapon groupings?

don't worry about it. it's just a newbie post

If I had a nickel for every time someone told me that my idea of building a giant robotic parrot out of melted down coins was a bad idea, I would have one kick a$$ giant robotic parrot.

You can assign weapons groups and select them in the config menu. By default i dont think keys are assigned for them. Usually i have the following setup :

SHIFT + Number (e.g. 1,2 etc) = Assign weapons group
Number = Select weapon group

You pick what guns are in the group by clciking them on or off on the HUD. By default the numbers (1,2 etc) are setup to fire weapon 1,2 etc. I never saw any reason to use them that way so i just replaced that.
I only ever used them switch between weapon groups with primarily shield damage (for the start of a fight) and normal weapons (for finishing the beggars off). This way instead of having 5 normal guns at the recommended class for your ship, you take 3 normal and 2 shield both at max class 4 your ship. Depending on energy you have 1 group with say 2 shield 2 normal and the other with 3 normal.

Word of warning tho in my version it always forgets your weapon groups - not even after a save and reload, sometimes in the middle of a battle which is really annoying.

So by pressing a button, you directly switch selected weapons off, and selected weapons on, in the Weapons list?

You got it right, Berleburg.

I use Numpad1-4 to switch between 4 configurations:
1: All weapons
2: All weapons except shield rippers.
3: Only shield rippers, plus a few ordinary weapons, still allowing infinite firing with full energy.
4: Only long range weapons (800m vs. 700m for my other weapons).

I use number 4 a lot, flying backwards with 75 m/s, waiting for the enemy to get into range. This way I can fire at them for a very long time without coming into their range or loosing energy.
