What do the weapon classes mean?

I see that weapons have different levels or classes. Like Class 6 weapons. But some do the same damage as class 5 weapons. What's the difference?

Does the class convey more damage somehow if it is a higher number?

Most of the time the higher the class the higher the damage. Although some classes as you have found do relatively the same amounts of damage. When you see Class 10 you will notice the difference.

There are other factors than damage.

The higher the weapon class, the more energy it needs to use. Be it for more damage, range, or rate of fire.
