mining and how to be a pirate

Ok, just two quick questions, I've finished the story and am now just wandering around making money. Firstly, on the starchart this is a filter called "minable zones" does this refer to mineral mining? if so, how do I do this?
Secondly, a couple of times a pirate vessel has demanded I drop my carge or be attacked. I want to hold up vessels as well, how can I demand they drop their cargo? If I cant do this does it mean the only way to steal cargo is to destroy the ship and tractor aboard the remains? This seems a touch inelegant and ,well, bloodthirsty.

Ok, I just found the answer to the first question but the second still stands.

Can't demand people though it's funny when you get powerful (Level 8 weapons up) weapons and shoot a transport and it dies in 1 shot ! Email DA for all the good it will do - -;

"mining" is just shooting those annoying little asteroids that your cursor goes white on and the bounce off of you its not very quick but i can be a way for a newbie to get a sufficent amount to get a accecptabe ship as for pirating, you cannot tell them to drop it but you can shoot the trade lanes and the stop then unsuspecting travelers will be stopped in the open for your killing go for the containers on the freighters not the ship's hull itsself they will then expolde dropping loads of shiznat. hope this helps.

You don't have to kill transports.

Get underneath them and shoot the containers until they explode. Get the cargo without effecting reputations (but they'll be pissed for the moment)
