Newbie

Helllo. I got Freelancer the other day and Ive been hooked on it. I really dont want to follow the story but I heard that if you dont follow it somewhat you cant advance and get the better ships and so on. Is this true??

Also, I am on a dial up way out in the country so I cant play online. Is Multiplayer just like that normal game where you have to follow a story, or a deathmatch, or can you basically run around doing anything. Just wondering becuse Im goin to a my uncles and they have DSL and I might be taking my comp to give Freelancer online a try.

Thanks

The multiplay is very much like the single player game except that there are no storyline missions. Just hop in your ship and go find something to do.

If you don't want to follow the storyline you can run an FL server on the same machine you play freelancer on and join your own game. No internet hassles to worry about.

Ok. Thanks. I didnt think about startin my own server and joining to try it. Thanks again.

There are also a few mods that remove the need to do missions or make all the ships etc available from the start, though the storyline does give you alot of background on the FL universe while giving you numerous opportunies for you to 'freelance' between missions Still it did really piss me off that your faction alliances were dictated by the story so MP is maybe the way.

Sorry for another question. If I setup a server on my computer and play using it does it save the game if I have to quit or do I have to keep the server up the all the time??

Thanks

If you as host of the Server quit, the server quits.

I'm not sure what every circumstance it saves the character you're using, but as far as I've been able to tell (based on reloading after crashes and just general use) it saves:

- when you dock with a station/planet
- when you launch from a station/planet
- when you arrive from a jump gate
- when you arrive from a jump hole
- when you quit

...on the last item there, I've found if I exit freelancer or load a different character while I'm flying about in space, upon my return I'm not where I was when I quit (I'll be at the last station/planet/jumphole/jumpgate I disembarked from) but I'll have whatever I was carrying when I quit (cargo/equipment picked up in space).

Your own server retains the save game information. So you can happily fly around the galaxy and when you need to quit and shut off the server, you can do so without losing any saved information. When you start up the server again later, your character will still be available when you go to join.

However, this character will not be available on any other servers. So if you do decide to eventually try gaming online, you will have to create a new character for any new server you join.

Unless there is a way to transfer characters, but I haven't heard of any.

i don't like the idea of having to create a new character for every server you play at... i mean.... many things could happen to the server and then you'd lose all that hard work you put into it........ then you have to start all over with another character

why couldn't they make it so that you'd have the character for every sever? it worked for diablo... i don't see why it won't work for FL...

"why couldn't they make it so that you'd have the character for every sever? it worked for diablo."

No, it didn't work for Diablo very well at all. Diablo was plagued by cheaters who would hack their character files then bring them online to grief honest players. Which is why the prefered method for playing Diablo2 multiplayer -- on battlenet -- meant your characters were stored on the server instead of on your local machine.

Of course that's all moot since beyond server-hosted character files there is no cheat protection in FL. Erk.
