If you don''t like FL as is, then MOD it!!

This is a free discussion forum on Freelancer. This is the place to discuss Freelancer issues NOT covered by the other boards!

If you don''t like FL as is, then MOD it!!

Alright, I've heard all the complaints from the few dissatified posters. Quite frankly guys, with all of the improvements you say should be easy to implement, why don't you all work together and try to put together a mod that can pound Freelancer into the ground?? Add new sectors, make combat more realistic, make bigger systems with bigger planets, add more ships etc. I'd be willing to lend my meager talents to such an endeaver, mainly in the form of voice acting, story work and producing sketches of ships. Most of the mods I see seem to be 1 guy doing it, so imagine what would happen if 20 or 30 of us with some mad skillz got together?

If you're interested, just post in this thread and maybe we can make this work.
(Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, Admin.)

Because like most crowd, they don't have the talents to do it. All talk and no walk. This is frustrating for them, so they take it out on DA or Microsoft. Anger projection, see? I'm not talking about those that give valid improvement suggestions. I'm talking about those ungrateful bastards who come here screaming about wanting something absurd from the game "It cauhn't be THAT hard!!!!!!"

While lots of stuff can be done by modding, it's pretty much only possible to add more of the same and tweak some parameters of that content.

You probably need access to the source code to implement most of the requests people are making (hangars and owning multiple ships, variable ship speed, dynamic economy etc).

That said, modding can certainly make this game more interesting if done right, it's just that quite a bit of the commonly requested features are impossible to do with modding as it stands now.

So, your inability to build a car from scratch with your bare hands prevents you from raising the issue if you find you new one isn't performing or they deliver you an Escort instead of a Beamer?

i like FL for what it is, but what it is isn't even what is written on the box let alone what was hyped.

I have to disagree with the don't like it, mod it philosophy. It takes time I don't have to implement things I don't have the mad skillz to implement... which is why I pay Digital Anvil 50$ for the game. So that they can take care of it. If they release an expansion pack that fixes things, I would consider paying money for that as well, so they can take care of it. There are a lot of things I might like to see in Freelancer (which has been fun so far, but I'm not sure about its longevity on my hard drive), but I just don't have the time or the energy to sculpt it to what I'd like it to be. Also, I just don't have an interest in modding Freelancer as a whole... other games, maybe.

For some modding the game might be the answer to some problems, but I just can't get it to work that way. I think there are valid complaints to be made about this game (hey, isn't that true of any game?), hopefully mods can solve some of them for some people.

FL is a 1st class game, although not 100% perfect. Not raising the issue of your troubled car just because you can't build a car with your bare hands is indeed stupid. If your Honda is troubled, then you should raise the issue. But if you pay the price of a Honda and get a Honda, you shouldn't scream demanding that your Honda should perform like a F1 race car. If FL is troubled, fine. Fire away. But you buy a 50$ game, and I think 50$ is very justified for what FL offers. If you disagree, then return it and move on to the next game.

I sometimes pretend my honda is an F1 car. . . but not when it's dangerous to or there are law enforcement types about

There are some great mods and modders out there - I'm still playing Diablo2 with mods. Of course it bears little resemblance to the original D2, but that just means I'm still playing a 3 year old game and having a ball. I hope I can say the same for FL in 3 years time.

All kind of goes to prove my point really =). Personally, I love FL, but I admit that it could be better.

Hopefully we will be seeing some good quality Mods coming out in the future. Most of those completed so far add new ships, weapons, etc to the game, or adjust the ships and weapons to make them more powerful. I haven't seen any that add new missions yet, although I imagine that is a little more difficult.

The Mod to stop the single player campaign and let you play a truly freeform game was good, although I've already made a few changes to that (increasing level wealth requirement considerably, altering ship speeds so that each vessel has a different speed, increasing mission payouts somewhat, and changing the reputations you have with the factions to all neutral so I could begin the game as an evil pirate just like the box that game came in said I could).

And here I wondered why game companies these days only bring out half-hearted games...

Well, but since it seems the gaming community these days seems to be satisfied with just that who's to blame them.

Don't get me wrong, the game was fun, but that's it. I looked at it, played it a bit, deinstalled it.
The time I spent playing this game maybe goes into the 40 hours or so. Now I have the best ship with the best weapons and more money than I could ever spend.

It doesn't even begin to compare with the time I spent playing Privateer (the first in the series) or other games. (The record still being held by the old original X-Wing... I must've played that game for at least a year)

Freelancer had great potential to once again be a game that will last. For me, it miserably failed at that.

(But then I guess I am just an idiot who should start programming his own mod. Besides the fact that half the things I would want in the game most likely would need a complete new exe file)

I probably would have played this game a whole lot more if i hadnt bought Earth and Beyond. Now this game i think is better, but Earth and Beyond was mmorpg. E&B had much of the same stuff that freelancer had, trading, upgrading, money, and something of a storyline. (the storyline would happen as patches were released). There just wasnt much new in the game.

*I hate my old signature, so I changed it...to this*

Hey, Raesene, think you could send the stuff you changed to me? It's always rather annoyed me to be forced to start as a lawful character. =) My email is [email protected]. Thanks.

Modding things can be difficult and time consuming, but worth it. Look at games like Half-Life. I still play it after 3 years or so. Then again, I have around 25 mods...

Still, Freelancer is a great game. And it has potential to be even better. If a clan system were implemented, and bases were able to be bought, this game would suddenly be the best game I ever played. Tribes owns that spot though. (Tribes 1, not 2. 2 is for fools!) Tribes.... what a great game.

Freelancer could have benefitted from being able to have a bit of walking here and there on planets and stations too. I wouldn't mind putting those light arms from Detroit to use

I gota say that FL is exactly as I expected it to be .I really enjoyed it ,I took about 40 hours to play the story and now have to discover the rest of the maps thhat is not bad value for the price of 8 videos or dvds at an hour each.I agree lots of room for improvement but maybe thats why MS brought the franchise ,most of their games have 3 or more models and maybe they saw the potential.I'll be standing in the que with hat on and money in hand if they do!

While most of us will agree that Digital Anvil and Microsoft could have enriched the game play and the Sirius sector as a whole to include a broader range options to explore after the SP story line is completed, like being able to build my own station or shipping company and duke it out with another house for example, I think they did a tremendous job (espicially since Microsoft was involved 'nough said) in creating an enjoyable game with limitless potential for expansion packs and player mods. More and more you find professional programers, artists etc leaving it up to the players to come up with these enrichments. You can think of it as a huge painting in which all can add to its variety and depth of creativity. So we can moan and groan about they should of done this or that but in the end, as others have mentioned, we can add to the stage they have set, wait for "official expansions", or move on to other endeavors. I say, where did I put my brush?

Always aim for center mass.
