I think that telling someone NEVER to buy missile launches is a bit harsh.
Early on in the game they can give you a bit of an edge and compare favourably with the overall damage your weapons do. Plus you usually scoop loads of javelin missiles anyway and they're not really worth selling. A bit after that stage in the game a good shield damage missile can save you loads of hassle.
However when a fully equipped very heavy fighter can dole out as much gun damage per game tick (estimated by others as 1.5 seconds) as a torpedo, whats the point messing about with missiles?
p.s. Frankster you can asign hotkeys in the config menu. I usually replace the '1' '2' for fire weapon 1,2 etc with select weapon group 1 or 2, and shft+number to assign a group. Though be warned its fairly unreliable and seems to forget groups all the time.
