Joining NPC Formations

I'm curious if anyone else has seen this behavior before.

The setup to this is that I was, in MP, trying to convert a character from the side of the law into a criminal. I was in Bretonia space and had begun my transition by befriending the Gaians who were neutral to me, and shooting down cops and bounty hunters with them. Eventually the other nearby criminal elements had moved from a full graph of red to just barely neutral and I set out to move the Outcasts from just barely neutral to friendly.

I was near a jump hole and a lot of outcasts were patroling the area with the occasional gaian patrol making the rounds as well. At this point Gaians were at full friendly with me -- and were in fact the friendliest faction on my list -- while I was about one-quarter bar away from outcasts going hostile. I decided that if I joined formation with an outcast patrol it would help me be in the right place at the right time to fight some outcast enemies alongside outcasts (which seems to boost a faction change much faster than just killing their enemies).

So I was doing exactly that, flying in formation with an Outcast patrol, when the leader of the patrol unexpectedly demanded a nearby Gaian ship to drop his cargo "or else". Keep in mind that Gaians are not listed as enemies to outcasts, nor vice versa -- killing one does not improve your faction with the other.

The Gaians response was, no, the outcasts would have to earn it.

And here was what surprised me: All the Gaians in the area immediately went hostile to me.

Better yet: after helping the outcasts gun them all down, my Outcast faction was improved by nearly three bars.

Guess it shows that when you form up with a particular group that you run the risk of pissing someone else off....

I'll certainly have to remember that when I need to change my rep. Thanks.
