Stash/Personal Banking...

Ok, I had an idea, but I'm not sure if it would work or not.

Let's assume Single Player only for now.

Could I take a cargo load of some really expensive commodity (gold, cardamine, whatever) and jettison it in the far reaches of some remote debris field, and then leave it there? Would an NPC take it? Would it get destroyed or would a system "timer" make it dissapear after a while? Why would I want to do this in the first place, you are asking?

Well, I remember reading some posts from people who got trapped during a single player mission with no money and couldn't repair their ship or anything and I though "Man, it would be nice if you had a bank or something that you could keep money stashed for such emergencies." So I thought, could you leave a pile of stuff floating out in space somewhere where you could retrieve it when needed, or make deposits/withdrawals from your stash?

And you could have a little stash in most of the major systems, so you are never far from one. But of course, this would only work if the NPCs didn't take/destroy it and if it remained in that same spot for the duration of the game.

I'm sure some of you are thinking "Why not just make a ton of money and hang on to it?" Well, that makes a lot of sense, so mostly my reasoning is pure curiosity. However, money in your pocket is easier to spend than money stashed in an asteroid field somewhere. lol.

Anyway, it's basically just curiosity. Any thoughts if this would work or even be useful?

Those are my thoughts, not yours, I'm WapCaplet[!

Never tried it, but I'm thinking that it would probably de-spawn at some point... after you get too far away, or when you leave the system.

If, for some reason, it did stick around, you certainly better make sure you know just where you put it... otherwise, it could take awhile to find it ( the Loot button has a short range).

Come to think of it, I doubt if it would work. If stuff you jettison were to become permanent fixtures, the game would have to remember every single thing you jettison over the course of the game.

Nice idea, though.

This would not work because the cargo disappears when you land, exit the system, or leave the area it is in for a certain amount of time. Nice try, though.

I'm betting it would go away after a predetermined period of time (likely after a short period of time). Think about all the stuff that ends up floating around after a fight-- any batteries or nanos beyond what you can carry, dropped commodities you don't have room for, or stuff dropped by NPC vs. NPC fights that you didn't stop to pick up.

All this stuff just floating around forever and forever, and you save your game.

At the beginning there wouldn't be that much, but after a while the quantity of this stuff would become enormous. We're not just talking about increasing the size of your save file, we're talking about enormous quantities of overhead for the game to think about while you're playing. Imagine the game trying to keep track of 1000+ various pieces of debris in New York alone while you tool around in Omicron Theta.

It's too much stuff to keep track of and would significantly degrade performance.

I know for a fact this stuff gets cleaned up after a time delay in MP. For instance at one point I was a little short on shield batteries after a fight and brought up the loot scanner. There were a couple batteries just slightly out of tractor range behind me. I wasn't moving. As I turned my ship around they disappeared (no other ships in the area either).

While I know that trash collection takes place in MP, I don't know for a fact it takes place in SP, but it stands to reason merely from a perspective of the necessity of keeping game overhead as low as possible.

I also do not think that this would work. I was recently fighting off a bunch of Corsairs and noticed some nanobots. I decided to finish off the enemies, before going back to scoop up the loot. When I destroyed the last enemy, I noticed that the nanobots had disappeared, along with the few additional things that I was going to tractor.

HOWEVER, I have heard about a new game that is soon to be released. In this game, you DO have a stash that you can return to. The game is called:
"Diablo Goes to Outer Space."

Yes it does dissappear. I find as soon as your out of range on scanner. Ive had cargo drop from ships but I was too full to carry. I countinued fighting and it took me a ways from the cargo. I had a waypoint there so I know it should be in that area but when I returned it was gone.

well seen as how you can keep almost unlimited amount of weapons on your ship, you ship IS your bank! just sell some unwanted weapons if you need money

That makes me curious; IS there a max number of spare weps you can haul around? I know I've had at least 15 extras on my ship before... Probably more than that.

I don't think there is a max number of weapons you can carry as cargo... I know I've had at least 20 spares (I like to give them to my friends) and then I've picked up even more from destroyed ships. The best part is they don't take up any cargo space.
About the caches of loot; I think the universe is "rebuilt" every time you leave a base, so all the random objects floating around are wiped out pretty regularly.

Now remember[! First you pillage and THEN you burn[!

Yea they are right as I actually tried moving some objects while killing Mollys. I was going to keep all the loot I was getting "hidden" so I could make some base runs later with it while still in the system. I flew to the far side of the planet and "Dumped" my cargo then went back to the Molly base and killed a bunch more and looted them again when I went back to stash some more I was surprised NOT to find a single thing I had left there. Bummer I mean I was getting some awfully good Items like Gold, Silver, Diamonds, Ect. and all of it was just gone man. So yea it sucks a little not being able to do it but I do see the point of system performance if it was tracking all of that stuff. Just some thoughts from the edge of space
