Why do people keep saying the missiles suck?

This is a free discussion forum on Freelancer. This is the place to discuss Freelancer issues NOT covered by the other boards!

@ NukeIt

The tactic you use is perfect. The reason people say missiles suck is because they dont use this tactic. Gun the sheilds and missile the corpes. Even if you are just using one launcher, missiles are the way to go.

@ Sherlog and klapdout

G-forces in space have no relevence, even if near a large body mass. In space the only effect you need to worry about is inertia.

I'm a big fan of missiles. On a heavy fighter, I keep 4 sets. For wimpy attackers, I hit em' with an Eraser missile to take out there shields and finish em' with a slingshot.
For larger opponents, I kill the shield with a Sweeper missile and finish em' with a Catapult, my personal favorite.
Of course, I keep large guns in front and keep an extra set in my hold for attacking different types of shielding.

it's nice to have a vhf with 2 tizona del cids, 2 other guns, 1 cannonball missile and 1 firestalker missile and as a extra a sunslayer torp...

u can kill every shield in 1 or 2 shots and launch the missiles at it, while also do flakshots at hit

u use 3 div speed and 3 div turnrated missiles... and then u must gonna get away from the extra flakshots...

against ai, just shoot about 2.5k away with thrusters full on a sunslayer torp, the most will have already a weak or no shield when u start shoot with ur guns, ok. it's expensive but fun to c the slow torp go to them and explodes into the group of fighters ...

missiles r fun if u can afford them, mostly i use missiles lately... on a defender is the slingshot missile a good 1, co'z u don't drain ur energy core that fast anymore... that's more worth then 1 missile launcher...

I have a theory on this albeit outdated Missle Debate;
Perhaps those of us dissapointed with the missles in Freelancer are really just missing the days of Freespace and those wonderful Aspect-Seeking missles. You KNOW the ones I mean...the missles you couldn't use untill you aqquired lock on a target. Now THAT was dogfighting. Bombard a target untill it's sheild is down and then stay on it untill you hear that sweet sound of missle lock. Game over. Stick a fork in it. Mmmmm...victory. Freelancer is the game FreeSpace wanted to be, without the aspect-seekers....or maybe watching Top-Gun was a bad idea at seven years old...."C'mon baby, lock up!"

yup, otherway u can destroy the missiles faster then with the torps... and then it's suck again...

but otherwhise u can kill an enemy with missiles some faster then with guns only... if ur energy core is empty then u will shoot with 2 guns only, that doesn't do mutch damage anymore, with a missile launcher u can shoot a longer time, but u need to shoot also the missiles to maintain good damage over a specif time... if u use 2 shield busters, 2 flak guns, 1 normal missile, 1 stalker missile and a sunslayer torp... u can destroy a target in 1 pass...

The higher the number the faster the gun shoots.

lag can be a real killer when you're dogfighting on a server. hard to aim straight with your guns when the lag kicks in and your screen freezes for a second, plenty of time to get pummeled by a squad gunning for you. I've noticed that missles act independendly of this lag. one time the lag got so intense, I fired off about 3 missles then ****ed my ship around. After the lag cleared, my target was dead. perhaps many players don't use missles in singleplayer. I know I didn't, but on some laggy servers you just can't stand logging out of, missles help a lot. also good for those assasinate missions when you want to end the mission quickly and collect your reward.

@ DEVO: I remember missiles where you had to wait for the target lock from Privateer (or was it Wing Commander?). Anyway, long before Descent and Freespace. The missiles in Freelancer require more skill + judgement to use, but I think this makes the gameplay richer. Of course, this also widens the skill gap and some game developers do not like that.

And a well-delivered Javelin, Slingshot or Catapult is instant kill for the appropriate kind of enemy ... Not to mention Starkillers.

Homing missiles are better than regular missiles and torpedos, even though the payload is less, simply because they look the coolest when launched.

Missiles are good at doing alot of damage, but they are crap because they cost so much and they use ammo.

@BlazeME, so u have most off the time shooting from 2 guns instead of all...

by my lastest campaign where i buyed before the mission of going to colorado a defender and ended the game also in a defender... i began with only guns, but when u faced better armored fighters i needed a missile launcher to get the dam over long time better then with all guns... at the end i used 2 slingshot missile launchers... i just ended the game, but i leave my fighter as it is, 2 slingshot missiles, 1 barrager mk I, 2 pyros type 1, pyros type 1 turret, starkiller torp...

on a class 10 fighter u don't have to use missiles, but facing 1 in a class 6 fighter it's whisly to use missiles to don't let the energy core drain to fast and to get some more damage over a longer time...

Missiles are too expensive and wasteful. too easy to dodge or c/m. When was the last time anyone but a n00b got toasted by a missile that mattered? I've never been seriously damaged by a missile except in huge capship encounters outside Malta, Crete, Leon or Ruiz. A few fighters are nothing to be scared of if theyre missiling you, similarly if you rely on missiles to take them out you are just wasting credits. Decent guns (mixed) are always quicker and more effective.

However i will agree that a S'slayer or S'killer launched on burners at a tight pack of fighters head on will sort more than a few of them out. I don't recommend Hellfurys for the same job though, the blast radius is too big and takes yer shields out.

..you think you're done with the past; but the past isn't done with you..

I don't remember Hellfuries being missiles, torpedoes, or anything else explosive.

Anyway, when facing real people, missiles give the quick attack boost you need to come out on top fast. They're worth the money if you want to beat other players.

Is that a pocket of volatile gas?
No, that's a jumphole...
