Rear facing turrets?

Ok,.. this could be because we dutch guys don't have the game yet,...

But what's the deal with rear facing turrets? How do they work?

Do you control them manually or do they autofire if you're being chased?

u go into turret mode and look behind you the fire

Well I've just being playing the demo. And as far as I can see, the turrets don't have Auto fire. Press "H" the default turret key and you will see your ship from outside. Now if you move the mouse the turret rotates and you can shoot at stuff around you.

It also depends on where the turret is situated on you ship. For instance a rear turret can obviously only shoot at targets behind your ship.

Yes,... uhm,... but i would have to fly blind,... to fire to my rear?

Or i'd have to enable cruise, or a waypoint,.. and than i would engage the ememies with 1 rear facing turret?????

Sounds kinda useless to me!

If you're flying something like the humpback you won't be doing much manuvering anyway.

Well yes,... but still it would be better to face your enemies head on, than to crawl away from them firing one lousy turret,...

So better spend money on good massive front weaponry, than on one rear turret,...

Turrets are expensive and overrated. The only time you would really use them is when you are instructed to exit a conflict/system into a trade lane, there you can blast anyone trying to flame your a#@.

the lib defender has only 1, a freighter has 6 of wich 3 face rear, but you are a good flier you'll dock whit a tradelane at 0 meters distance (at the green gate) and you'll be sucked in whit out the irrritating standstill.

You can not fly in turret mode but in rear vieuw you can, and whit a littel practice you can mamouver back wards in to a tradelane.

if all u CAN do is crawl away licking your wounds while shooting between your legs, then a rear turret is like gold...

although if u just need to run, not maneouver (open areas) then just afterburn to 200m/s and then kill engines, swing around, and blast them as they chase you... 200m/s negative velocity AND shooting at the enemy... its great!

Hmmm if i got money to spare i'll buy a turret,... if not, i won't waste money on it!

And besides, when docking with a trade lane, under fire,... shield batteries and nonobots will do the trick until I jump,...

Ships like the Valkyrie(which I fly) have a single turret mount on the BACK of the ship, it is completely useless in combat, since it is the only turret, and there is no autofire option. Ive found one use for it though :-p, in Omega-11, when I mine diamonds, my main guns tend to blow up the diamonds after I blow the meterorites, so I use the turret for more surgical extraction, seems to be the only useful way to use it.

I agree that a turret that faces only the rear is fairly pointless if there's only one of them. On the Humpback and Dromedary it's a different story, coz there're enough of them to do some damage. But otherwise, I think it's just a waste of a mount. Especially on the Eagle/Titan. Why would you ever want to fire a single weapon rearward in one of those when you can turn around and dump out thousands of points of damage? Oh, well. Not much we can do about it, is there? Except complain about it in forums at 3am like I am right now, that is
