It''s Official!!! Freelancer is critically acclaimed

CGW was the last major publication to give out a review and they gave 4 1/2 stars.

PCGamer 90%
IGN 9.2
Gamespot 8.3
Avault 4 stars

Anyone think the Freelancer could get game of the year.

No.

There's still lots of year left so i wouldn't dare to decide yet. Who knows what gamesare still to come this year. Sure, Freelancer has big chances but i wouldn't start to plan the party this early if i were you.

Game of the year?

Possible, if there aren't going to be any games released until next year.

Personally, i doubt it. I don't even know if it will be 'simulation of the year'.

There's a lot of stuff with high potential due out this year. X2 for one. As for other games.....Lionheart comes to mind, along with Star Wars KOTR...and a bunch of expansions, incl. those for NWN, Morrowind and WarCraft3.

I personally don't trust these reviewers anyway. They have this tendency to overhype and support certain products. FL is one prime example of this.

I don't really know if it really matters if something is dubbed 'game of the year'.

To me, forums, in most cases, provide a better picture of how good a game is.

Well, I think most of us here would give it a 90% or so on average. Sure, there are those who'd give it lower, and those who'd give it higher, but it seems the average concensus here is about 90%.

Gamerankings.com shows it has an average of 84% among game publication reviews.

Definitely not game of the year...especially with juggernauts like Doom 3 and Deus Ex 2 coming out....

Not even taking into account what else it might come up against later in the year, it's already got some formidable competition. But, in it's specific genre, who knows...

My choices for top games in particular categories hardly ever match public or critical opinion. I doubt I could care less, unless public opinion happens to influence publishers to commission more of the type of games I enjoy. I have faith in developers though.

The best judge of the value of a game is yourself, and nobody else. Publishers and developers who don't release demos of their products are doing themselves a disservice.

So far, Freelancer is the best game I've played in 2003. I certainly hope there will be more games of similar or better quality than Freelancer in the coming months, but my enjoyment of Freelancer will be unaffected by their arrival.

I've been pretty surprised at how well it's been doing. A friend of mine operates the GoGamer.com website and he says it's his biggest selling game right now.

It's way to much of a niche genre to really compete for game of the year. And even in it's genre I think X2 looks to one-up the game on the technical and depth of gameplay side. Still, Freelancers approachability could make it the more popular game. That and Microsofts presence.

It's easily the most enjoyable game I've played in a while. An expansion pack with more attention to the open ended side by adding things like the ability to hire wingmates and more varied random mission would be nice. And although a fluctuating ecomony isn't top on my list it would be nice too. But even without all that, another good SP story would make a good expansion pack too.

Oon-tee-dee!

I think it has potential to be in the top handful of game but not the #1 slot. FL overall is a great game, but I feel the SP went by way too fast. I just hope when the developers see how well the game is selling they'll put a lot of time into an expansion pac. Ever since the earliest Star Wars games I've been looking for a game like this, it just feels like they worked on it for so long, then said, "Ok that's done enough to sell, let's ship it!" I just feel that if they'd have put a few more months on story line and making the "Open ended" aspect deeper, then we could really be talking about game of the year. As it stands, I don't think it will make it.

Mind you, just because these games are announced for this year it doesn't mean that they are actually gonna be released in 2003. Didn't the history of Freelancer teach you a lesson?

My guess is that FL will get an honorable mention in one of the categories, but I don't think it will get game of the year.

That being said, it's definitely going to be on MY list of gameS of the year.

I think the other game on my list will be Ur-Quan Masters!! I played version 0.2 last night. Anyone else tried it? Ok, ok, wrong forum, but for some reason FL sort of reminds me of Ur-Quan Masters (name of the new port release of Star Control II). Something in the exporation aspect I guess.

Anyway, I digress...

I would think that maybe they will get game of the year; there is a lot of underlining infrastructure in this game. A lot to build upon with the FreeLancer franchise; you have a universe now work with it!

Sorta like to work with them on the next project the put out in regards to FreeLancer

It should get high marks for its genre but not game of the year. Don't get me wrong. I would love for it to make game of the year but the competition is strong and space sims are not as popular as shooters or RPGs.

I came. I saw. I conquered. And sometimes get conquered.
