Now truly enjoying the "Free" in Freelancer.

Now that I have completed the single player storyline, which I thought was great, I must admit that I do not regret that it's over. I am having the greatest of time just exploring and doing whatever I please. I really feel like the game is just beginning, and for spits and giggles, I am writing down the names of every person I have met. (I did find someone with my last name). The list is getting really, really long! This game is bigger than I think most people realize. If only William Wallace was here, he would sure enjoy the....FREEEEDOOOOMMMMM!

If I want to make a trade run, I do it.

If I want to take missions, I take them.

If I want to map out a system, I map it.

If I want to search for derilect ships, I search for them.

If I just want to joy fly and enjoy the scenery, I do it.

Now that is what the "Free" in Freelancer is all about!

Bingo! You just summed it up. THAT's Freelancer.

I think of it as an explorable universe with a bonus SP game thrown in. The dogfights are fun, the graphics are amazing and opportunities are only limited by your imagination.

We have all heard the numerous suggestions, complaints, frustrations, opinions, etc. And to be fair, I have a few recommendations for more variety in the missions, but all in all Freelancer is about having a huge, full, intriguing Universe to explore and exploit. And for those people who feal cheated, I can understand that you were expecting more. But maybe you were just expecting something DIFFERENT. Freelancer is what it was meant to be, nothing more, nothing less.

Anyway, I won't ramble on. Just wanted to say I agree whole-heartedly. I will be playing and re-playing and multi-playing this game for a looooong time.

Heh he, great post Thorndog !! You really hit the the spot with this one ! It´s very nice to see your enthusiasm, we sure can use that around here. In fact, they should make your post a sticky, so everyone can see what Freelancer is really about

Finally some normal people who get the idea of the game! Hooray!! I can't say how sick of all those "that's it?" peeps i am.

God dam mate you must be bored!

Come over to my house you can dig the garden, paint the walls, cut the lawn, clean the guttering, and even go to work for me

But on a serious side of things! If you are basicly mapping out the whole game. Why not think about getting into website design. Based around the game itself! Posting all you information there. Many people have done this based on specific games. Doing that would also make all your hardwork in mapping the game even more enjoyable! Because you would be sharing all your information with other people who also like the game via your own website. Just a thought!

Gary,

Actually, there is method to my madness in writing down the names of everyone I meet. It help me to slow down and actually enjoy the game to it's fullest. I have found myself in other games trying to rush just to get to the next place or see the next cutscene. I want Freelancer to last as long as possible and this is one way for me to make that happen. And, it's actually quite interesting to see that when you revisit a base or station, there are new names to add to the list.

If I did come work for you how much do you pay? I'm about to retire soon anyway. :-)

Take care,

nice post, real nice.

To: Thorndog!

Accually mate your spot on there, I made the big mistake myself of checking out the SPOILER forum. Which I now regret! I must say you are doing the right thing in making the game last you to it's fullest. By taking your time to take notes of things, and map them!

I'm now waiting for "X2 The Threat" to come out here. And I won't be making the same mistake twice, by reading Hints and Tips on the game in there forum. Then again I don't really have any choice in the matter anyway because I'm banned from the Egosoft Forum!

But maybe thats a good thing! Because I won't be able to go to there forum and spoil the game by reading the games secrets there.

So acually I'm glad I'm banned! As daft as that sounds.

One of the best things I have done with this game is NOT read any of the spoilers. I am only about 5 or 6 missions into the SP game and I find something new and cool EVERY time I play the game, even when I am not doing SP missions. The universe is HUGE, all the more so if you don't read about it ahead of time.

I like the idea of keeping track of people you have met. Adds a little something to the game. Perhaps it's the concept of actually placing yourself in the game. If I were a true Freelancer, flying around the galaxy, I would probably keep track of people I had met, where they were, what faction they are associated with and whether or not I had done any missions for them, etc. In a game like FL, the more information I can gather, the better. I love finding a new base and being able to add it to my commodity list.

And it isn't always about finding the best stuff either. I want to find EVERYTHING. Best stuff, worst stuff, coolest base, worst base, etc. It's all about exploring and experimenting. If someone gave you a ship and dropped you in the middle of an uncharted galaxy, you probably wouldn't run out of things to do and places to see for years. That is possible in FL. Especially if you don't read about it ahead of time. GETTING the coolest ship isn't fun; FINDING it on your own is.

It's the journey, not the destination.

Keeping track of people you meet...I hadn't thought about that, but it's a pretty cool idea. For the most part I try to get the Bartenders to know me so they greet me every time I come in. I decided to designate a "home base" for myself, and started just entering and exiting the bar to try and get to know everyone on the planet(I don't know, but it adds a little something extra when there's some place you can call "home" where everyone knows you).

Rockets: $100,000
The look on that pilot's face when you launch a full pod of screamers up his tailpipe: priceless

I agree 100%. I finished the single player campaign Three nights ago and I spent more time playing the game the last two nights than I did when the SP game was in motion. I'm currently having fun running trade routes in the Libery and Bretonia systems with my humpback. The humpy is too clumsy to survive against hordes of enemies in Rheinland so I'm staying away from that right now. But it's a blast wiping out whimpy corsairs with my six turrets. ;-P

Once I've amassed some money I'm going to track down some of those very heavy fighters and try one or two out. But the fun part comes when I attempt to locate a base that sells the fighters without cheating. I suspect it could take me awhile

Juggernaut,

Don't worry too much about not getting the game at the same time as the rest of us. Just think, when you finally DO get it, it will be new and fresh and exciting and you can rub that in all our faces.

Of course, the game is so good that it will still be exciting for the rest of us. And deeper....and more rich...and more engaging....

Haha, just teasing you buddy. Hang in there. It's worth the wait!

Am I the only one who felt that they pushed the SP storyline along too quickly? It seemed like you barely had time to earn enough credits for weapons and loadout upgrqades...

I mean sure -- it took between 40 to 45 _real_ hours for me to get through it, but it was probably longer because I kept telling Juni to wait for the next mission so I could go run a few independent missions to earn some cash... especially during some of the middle SP missions wherein you're not getting paid for completion, your reward is survival. Ummm -- DUH! But howzabout coughing up some gitas, Juni? A Lancer's gotta eat. If you didn't have some credits, you couldn't afford to load up on countermeasures and missles and your survival chances would have been even slimmer than they were...
