What does this do?

On the target status in your hud(bottom left) there is a button that says 'switch to target'. When you click that it comes up with a picture of the target that you can click 'specific' areas on their ship and it puts a little red target on them in that window. What does this do? Can you target their guns so you can knock off the ones you want?

Maybe. I never really used it, but my guess is you could target turrets on jumpgates, stations and such ilk. Hm, I think I'll go and attack a battleship just to see if I can destroy their guns before I turn to stardust.

Yeah you can target specific areas of a ship but you'd have to be an extremely good shot to say knock a gun of a fighter.

I only managed to destroy certain guns (especially the cruise disrupters). But there never fell off any weapon that i could tractor in that way.

Against fighters I just find it easier to knock the fighter off the gun, hehe

One thing you can use this to do is target vulnerable areas. In one of the SP missions, one of your friends tells you to "target the engines of the gunboats, they are the weakest area", or somesuch. You can set this to target the engines, and you don't necessarily have to be directly behind the gunboat and constantly adjusting your aim. The computer will do it for you. You can also knock turrets off of capital ships and bases.

Course, the engines on the gunboats were easy to spot since they had all that flame coming out of them.

And, it's just a hunch on my part, but I bet they aren't actually any more vulnerable than the front

Yep. It allows you to see all the weapons mounted on another ship and target them. Or in the case of salvaging derelicts, just shoot it once or twice and the guns, turrets and missles fly off into space for you to beam aboard.

A nice feature is to select a Battleship and use the individual targeting to see where you have to shoot off their guns. Not reccomended for anyone who wishes to stay in the good graces of the local constabulary. Heh.

I wish they would add the ability to destroy bases and 'liquidate' rival factions. To my knowledge this isn't supported.

Yeah, it'd be great to kill off all the factions! Just for fun, then you could load an old savegame and keep playing in a universe that you were not the sole member of.

I am new around here. I just wanna say about that; a few days ago i tried to target some guys' weapons (type that i have not ), in frankfurt system.its hard to point their subsystem when combat with lazer weapons but i figure out that i should use some missiles, and then when , bing down them i saw that i tracked their weapons to my cargo bay!Maybe it doesnt works all time but when i tried it worked.

I think it only works for missles i tested it on guns on stations and it had no effect till i used a missle on it
