Was this in MP? Perhaps you stumbled across someone's mission before they could arrive.

this was in mp
but it was on my own server and i was the only who played in that session

Haven't played MP yet, but is it possible to do other people's missions? That could cause some issues if you get lots of people on a server...

That and there will be alot of pissed off people in MP looking for missions that never appear.

I came. I saw. I conquered. And sometimes get conquered.

This happened to me in SP once, I thought I was seeing things.

Yeah, the "mystery mission". It's a known bug.
I've recreated it 5 times so far in Colorado alone, and at least 4 other times in different systems.
It seems to happen more when you talk to people in the bar about the missions, they are offering and then take a mission off the job board.
You get to where one of the other missions was supposed to happen, and there it is. You complete whatever that mission was, and then get paid for it, even though you didn't "accept" another job.
I think it is possible as well to stumble onto something that is "supposed" to be offered as a mission for you, and to beat whatever you happen to find. This seems to be most common with the "kill a character" type missions.

You want funny? Go look in a mirror!
