Frustrations of an impatient player... help, anybody?
Having played the demo version for a couple hours, I had already done the lengthy tutorial mission 1 when I finally got the full version a couple of days ago. Starting a new game, I was first put of be the total lack of customiability the game offered (I thought those limits applied only to the demo). Seeing that everything stayed the same as in the demo, I couldn't be bothered to go through those boring first hours AGAIN and decided to just try to copy my demo savegames into my game folder. Great, I thought, works fine, as the game readily accepted my old saves.
Since then I've been playing the game for quite a few hours, sometimes cursing over the slow progress I made. It took quite a while until my character reached the money limit it takes to get to level 2, and when he didn't advance then, I thought maybe you need that amount in cash. Well, a dozen or so amazingly uneventful light weapons hauls later, I had the cash all right, however, Trent was still stuck in level 1. So I started to assume I needed to advance in the plot somehow and cruised around the system some more. I even raised all the cash to get a better standing with other factions, especially the Junkers, appearing far more jovial than those uptight liberty guys. Finally I got too frustrated being restricted to NY system, and it finally dawned upon me what had gone wrong.
Having used a demo savegame, I apparently couldn't advance past level 1 EVER, and the plot would never continue.
Now, I don't like to replay games much, especially if I'm forced to redo exactly the same things all over. I simply don't have the time or the patience for it, unless I'm feeling very entertained doing so, something which Freelancer's first few hours certainly don't (not the second time around - the first time wasn't too bad). So I checked out the editing section of those boards and hacked my starting money to an amount I needed to get where I left off in SP right away - I didn't consider that cheating, as I had already come that far before. Unfortunately, this hacking only changes MP starting values, not SP, and playing MP by myself proved not very funny. While I wouldn't mind to do without the plot, my hacking apparently did something ugly to the difficulty level. Else I couldn't explain why a couple of low-level fighters - no matter which faction's - would cut through my fully equipped rhino within 5 or 10 seconds even while I constantly recharged my shields!
Now I'm considering stashing FL into that corner where I put all those games I never got much past installing and continue playing Moo3. A shame, really, but I simply can't find the patience to start the game over. Seeing that there are som many ppl absolutely fascinated by the game, though, I'm ready to give it another chance - IF I find a way to go on playing the game where I left it off - any ideas, anybody?
