Mining Areas

Ok, what are the deal with mining zones. I found the mining zone full of gold and haven't really figured out what to do there yet. Is there a way to actually mine or what are you supposed to do in the mining areas?

Any tips or idea would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Look for the small, mobile pieces of space debris. You should get a neutral targeting cursor when you put it over these pieces. You mine by blowing them apart and tractoring in any loot that pops out.

A note: mining really isn't all that profitable. It's just one of those things you do if you're in the area anyway (say, right after completion of a job) and happen to see a whole lot of minables floating around.

Reaper: $200,000,000.
Rockets: $100,000
The look on that pilot's face when you launch a full pod of screamers up his tailpipe: priceless

Tip: configure your ship to fire only ONE weapon when mining. It reduces the risk of blowing up the item you're mining for.

Something with very little hull damage value, like a stunpulse, which is still good in combat but won't nuke your loot.

Mining debris, water or hydrocarbons isn't particularly profitable, but more valuable commodities (metals, alien organisms) can make a tidy profit - it doesn't take long to finance a Defender by mining the Colorado asteroid fields.

Also doesn't hurt to find a base with a particularly good price for a commodity in the middle of a field you can mine for it.

but that's another story....

As a rule, you're not going to get a good sell price for stuff right where you're mining it; and the further you haul it from the source, the more you can get for it. Only makes sense, right? But, if you look around, you might find where this "rule" is bent a little.

Mining can be very profitable, but, you usually have to find the right mine location. I know of one in particular that every single thing you hit drops some goodies. And then you can take those goodies to a certain base and sell it for about 1600 cr/ unit. It's all a matter of how much time you want to spend mining and how far you want to carry it that'll determine how much money you make. Keep looking for minable zones and see how hard it is to actually gather material quickly. Some minable zones take forever to start dropping things. Others, like I said, drop all the time. All part of exploring the Sirius Sector.
