Help with Piracy

What is the best way to engage in piracy? I was having fun with it, but was disappointed to have damaged so much of my loot in the fight.
As I understand it, targeting specific systems helps to reduce cargo loss, but that can be somewhat difficult to achieve in a hot fight. And what is the best way to get in with the good graces of / find a pirate base in the early game? The game makes it much, much easier to begin with the Navy life.
Thanks for any advice.

Ahh.. the days of afterburning past Confed Broadsword patrols in my Centurian on my way to New Constantinople Base.

And yes you start with a good reputation. I would have prefered to start with a neutral rep to everybody but hey. We can't have it all good. I have everybody neutral to me so I am free to explore. Kinda fun watching ppl attack each other and then just picking up the cargo afterwards, also a good if you just want to explore.

The bases need to be neutral to you. And don't worry so much about damaged cargo... it happens.

But are there no good tactics for preserving cargo?

Is is of strategic interest to target subsystems on a ship? Because as it is I find it more of a pain in battle than it is worth.

Depends on where you're at. I've been in the Rhineland and New Tokoyo systems and got a full hold of nice goods from a merchant that I killed. I've noticed that the cargo in New Liberty isn't as "plentiful" as found in other systems.

Well, I haven't tested it or anything but I suspect it's got something to do with your level. It's got nothing to do with subtelty, I can tell you that much. As a newbie in a starflier I'd be lucky to get 10-20 units of cargo from a transport. Much later, I returned in a fully tricked out Titan and started blasting transports with level 10 weapons. Damage the cargo? Hardly. More than I could carry. Every time. And that was in Liberty, so I doubt also it has anything to do with the system you're in. I also never targetted specific ship systems.

Thanks Zem, that's comforting. I'll simply have to play more ..

Has anyone had any luck with disabling ships outside of the SP missions? I know this doesn't really serve a purpose in the game, but for the sake of sadism I'd like to leave a few hostiles stranded in deep space now and then .. Or, alternatively, take out all of his weapons systems and toy with his ship.

Good engine, but I think the game needs a little more imagination.

I'm not sure I've seen subsystem targetting really work. I've also never had any part of my own ship get disabled. In general, I don't get a good sense from this game, without looking at the shield/hull bars on the bottom of the screen, just how much damage I have taken. In the old Wing Commanders, you get electrical panels exploding in the cockpit, wires dangling, screens flickering, glass cracking, etc.... but I guess that's another topic.

I have had my wing blown off before against the nomads in the single player. So I am assuming it can be done

@Zem

That could be. I haven't be pirating in Liberty since I got my saber decked out with some sweet weapons. Will be heading back that way with a hold full of cardamine next time I play FL.

Yep... would love to have the Dragon fighter in this game. But if I had to choose, I don't know if anybody played a game ( can't remember the name ) but it is a wing commander game where you can be Kilrathi or Confed. You start with a carrier ship and then mine or plunder planets getting resources to build ships. then you can go out and fly those ships. Theres one ship from the kilrathi I loved. The Koran , a heavy fighter. If that ships came out of a astroid field to attack me I would crap my pants. That ship just looked evil and strong.

ah yes..the koran, that thing scared me when I was playing wc...I always beat it when I saw the cresent moon with the 8 huge particle cannons on its wings ..or am I thinking of something else...

Post Thu Mar 20, 2003 6:26 am

you must be talking about wing commander armada , man i loved that game

Post Thu Mar 20, 2003 6:41 am

Yes thats it. Wing Commander armada. And yep. That crecent moon shape ending in claw like edges is with it's massive amount of fire power was not fun when it was firing at you. Even the confed banshee had trouble when fighting that ship.

knew it...those are my fondest memories from my youth I think, its been forever since I played a good space sim, its what I grew up on, its nice to go back to my roots...as for that koran, I'd love to see some malicious server admin edit the ships a bit, throw a koran in there with 8 nomad weapons BWAHAHA, make it unbuyable to people and just have it hunt the high level peep who keep raping me at docks >

hehe... I would want a fighter like that. It still is one of my FAV.

Heres a link to it.

I think anybody who played WC Armada will not forget that ship so easily, especially those that played Confed. I loved played agaisnt my buddies, where I was Kil'rathi and they where confed.... fun times.
