The Computer Games Review

I have just read the Computer Games Review found on the home page. It doesn't make for joyous viewing. Is it a fair review or what? I am from the UK and I'm expecting it from the US any day now. I played Elite and Privateer and I'm expecting something of equal joy. I hope I'm not disappointed. There are a lot of Americans who have played this for a few days now, so what are your brief impressions?

As you might guess I do not agree with many of the reviewers points, and I actually find it to be poorly written - with that said, have you tried the demo?

If you like the demo, I am quite certain you will like the full game!

I'm an Englishman living over here in the USA, so I have the best of both worlds.. the luxury of playing Freelancer the day it was released, and the culture of being brought up playing the classic Elite (on my Acorn Electron.)

I loved Elite.. I still do.. and nothing will ever be as good. Nothing will spark the imagination as those line drawn starships did (see my sig) and nothing will beat landing on a new planet to find the enconomy is especially favourable on this trade run.

Until now.. Freelancer is the best replacement Elite I've seen, and I've played them all. Trust me... you'll love it to. Yes, sure, there are a few aspects that some will find monotonous or frustrating (like the lack of variation in the bar missions and ALWAYS dying the first time I try one of those super-profit runs - I swear it's fixed!!) but overall we have a winner here. And with the MOD community already turning our some create additions to the game, I can't see myself getting bored for a long while.

I am another Elite Baby (although I was quite old at the time) and I agree, you will love it.

But, and its it a big but, you may well still feel VERY short changed when you have finished the plot in about 20 hours of game play. So far I have not found it to be much fun after the plot has finished, and I am not mad keen on trying multi-player (I have had bad experiences with other games).

I wouldn't necessarily expect the review to be well-written, considering it's on a ROMANIAN WEBSITE!!!!!111

I skimmed the review. It doesn't seem to be *wrong* in any sense, although the reviewer seems a little too fixated on details (like complaining that Trent doesn't have any random dialog in space).

As you can tell by reading complaints on this forum. if you're expecting the uber-nerdbomber space sim, you're not going to get it in FL. If you're looking for nerdbomber-lite, like me, then you'll be happy with it

Well just consider the facts. How many positive reviews for FL? how many negatives? What's the average score? then decide for yourself.

The latest issue of another German gaming magazine (PC Action) is out today: they gave Freelancer 88%.

Concluding comment:

"Privateer meets Wing Commander: the best space sim since a long time"

"Sorry for offending your delicate sensibilities. Perhaps my next film will be about a talking dog who braves the harsh realities of the world in a heart warming attempt to find his rightful owners, who mistakenly thought he was dead. That way you could watch it and get a fuzzy feeling inside and when it was over you could all go f*ck yourselves." - Troy Duffy, director of The Boondock Saints
