Should have advanced to Gunboats/ Corvettes
If you look at the missions in the main SP there is no way a fighter could realistically deliver the firepower or carry the armor and shielding to succeed... except by shear luck or in Freelancer's case, scripted events. Too much scripting removes the player from interacting with game events and dulls the experience.
A much better solution would be to actually give the player some wingmen and a larger ship, like a Gunboat or a Corvette with an array of missiles, torpedoes, and energy weapons. Then in the missions allow them to see the threats and plan a way to defeat them on their own. Much more fun from what is already present in Freelancer. Turret-View is very nice and very easy and the switch from the joystick to the mouse enables the escape from fighter craft to much larger ships with little change in the flight dynamics incorperated in the game and no change in the player interface. It's just a slightly larger ship with more guns. More expensive to operate, but can carry enough cargo to pay for it, so it would represent another major RPG goal for players to achieve.
It certainly wouldn't break the game either. By the time I finished the main SP I had 4.3 million credits and instantly hit the maximum charater level. Freelancer is not supposed to be a Fighter-Only game........ so why are we always being forced into that role in the SP storyline and gameplay in general?
