Is the universe endless?

I am currently in the New Tokyo system, flying towards Kyushu system, without using a jump gate. Is it possible? I'll find out soon, if it is possible, then it means the universe is endless in this game, seemless, and all the dead space in between could be a new home to planets.

Wish me luck,

Nearest object to my location: Medium Blue Green star, center of New Tokyo, 380.0 K away.

No, it's not possible. The game wasnt designed that way. You'll eventually hit the game engine's limit which is pretty damn far away.

oh well, i was kinda thinking that the jump gates were a trigger to load the new system anyway. No limit found yet though, i'm about 800k from the nearest star Turning around now. Too boring.

Woah EB, new sig, it's crazy!! Lol.

Ya the universe has to end sometime, or the computer wouldn't be able to handle it all, but they could make a ton of empty space all around it so it feels endless

So has anyone figured out the exact distance yet. I think im ight leave my game runnign overnight and see. Even 800K from the center is a lot of empty space. Its too bad there wasnt a more interactive economy. I find most of the outlaw bases are too close to the mains systems, doesnt seem very real to me. Id love it you could build your own bases way out in space.

I left my ship running at 300 in one direction and whent out for the night. We came back 4 hours later and the ship was 4931.0k from the last know planet.
I guess you could gone on forever. Pretty Cool;->

yeah, although it would depop pretty soon...

does anyone have a guess why when u leave benford or w/e just before going to magellan for the 1st trime only one cruiser fires those weird ring things? they would seem to be more effective if they all shot, but i dunno maybe one or the other was a repair gun, that would actually slow the destruction of the station...

Well I left Freelancer on last night and I got to 7800 K form the Medium White star in New York. I wonder if you can break 10000k?? Ill have to try again.
I wish it didnt pause the game when you alt tabbed. Woul make it much easier. :/

32 bit float ... that is one fcking lot of coordinates
say... the solar system on a meter or 3 detail

Nah, what would be endless is if they added the third dimension. Sure, you can go up and down (good job on that one, E&B f*cked up on that attribute...it's space and they couldn't go up?! Messed up). Anyway, everything is on a relative 2D plane...would be crazy if they added in the new plane, and that trade lanes also went up and down rather than just left and right. Makes things a hella lot harder to actually make a starmap on your comp for that but hey, how kick ass would that be? I have yet to see a RPG like that to involve it...would be the first of its kind.

As far as I know, there's a certain number that's the max you can go to in ANY flight sim, it's supposed to be like the largest a game's computer can calculate , something like that. I think it's like 4 billion something.

So what do y'all do to get back after going that far? I would just try to find a way to kill myself then respawn somewhere. Better stock up on those mines and jettison all your shields.

How do we get back......I just load the save game.

bah, I shoulda read this thread before trying it myself...

Kinda dissapointed now, cos I remember reading before FL's release that you would be able to, and the funny thing is that there are stars that look bigger than the others on the skybox, and if you fly towards em and then check your starmap it shows you are flying in the direction of the next star system!

Whatever happened to FL unloading and loading parts of the universe as you went along like Dungeon Seige does?

And did my ship starts rattling and shaking so much when I stayed in cruise mode for 5000k?

Has anyone experienced this weird glitch: You set a course spanning mutiple systems (not involving jumpgates, just holes) that when you get to the last waypoint in a system, it will display the waypoint to the next system ON THE CURRENT SYSTEM MAP: coincidence? I think not.

Errr... I don't understand the question. Oh deay, its too early for this.

With all this space and they HAD to crop up the planets, stars and jumpgates etc........................What would be kickass would see some REAL distance between planets, stars and spacestations - with lanegates stretching 350K's instead of 30-50 K's, extended the span between each lane too from 7K to 16 K's, give some kick ass dimensions to the planets and stars and spacestations.......Well, wishful thinking, huh. They could have done it, but I wonder how the hardware would manage.
