What are your favourite trade routes in this mod?
I'm an opportunist who prefers to blow NPCs up and sell their cargo. Yeah I know trading is far more lucrative blah blah but this is the way I like to play it A couple of VHFs have large enough cargo holds to make the pirating+trading combo viable, e.g. the Hydra Corvette.
The new systems have an obscenely profitable prisoner run, though.

I, too, am more of a fight-'em'and-sell(or mount and use )the-loot kind of pilot. Fighting a couple wings of Bounty Hunter Firesprays and Hammerheads yields some pretty juicy loot (Reaver II's, Buckshots, those lvl10 shields, nice Missiles, & typically plenty of commodities).
And needless to say, fighting some Corsair and Outcast VHF can give you some Verrry nice equipment - Tizona del Cid, Salamanca II and III's, Wyrms, and awesome Shield Generators.
Red Hessians will cough up some of the best missiles and mines in the game - Cannonballs ($12k apiece), and Screamer and Cutter mines) - and their Millennium Falcons sport some very expensive Shields.
I would say doing this with a Hydra or Hawkeye MkII is the most lucrative way of a-prowlin' - what, with enormous cargo space, you can tractor in ALL of the loot, then sell it at whichever base pays the top dollar.
Just buying up a cargohold-full of commodities and trudging to another base -- please, spare me the anguish and deadly boredom nah, it'll work, but where's the fun in it?

It depends on what kind of guns you like. I like fast ones (projectile speed at least 700kps), not fast refiring ones (reload rate). I also don't have any "preferred" setup, I change guns a lot. My current loadout is a quark cannon, 2 pulsar cannons, 2 LAAG tachyon guns, and a warhammer.
It is possible to mount the Naginata forward guns on the Hawkeye's lvl 10 turrets (cough), but firing those kinda takes huge chunks out of your energy. I have two installed (you can fit three), one is tied to my regular attack guns while the other I save for emergencies. You'll need a PowerPlant Upgrade 5 to be comfortable.
You can fit (just barely) a Balistner capship powerplant (100k output, 10k recharge) in your Hawkeye and that'll probably allow you to mount and fire three Naginata guns, but you'll have like zero extra storage.
I did the SP campaign with this setup lol. I even destroyed the battleships that ambush you in Alaska, but nooo, Walker has to insist on sacrificing his cruiser. Man they oughtta have made the SP campaign branching, like in the Wing Commander games.
P.S. This is also why I want this ship downgraded, lol. I mean, the specs are just insane.

The ship is in the Earth Alliance system. I don't exactly remember but it's not on the nameless station orbiting Jupiter. It should be either on Moon Base, Earth, Mars, or Mercury. You can't buy just the powerplant, it's a package deal
The other ships on that base were not to my taste either (another capship and a so-so VHF I think), but it only took me a very short flight (one trade lane away) to buy a decent (read: flyable) VHF, most likely a Hydra Corvette. Then fly that to Iowa station to transfer the loot to the Hawkeye MkII. Don't forget to stop by that station orbiting Jupiter either, to buy the 3x lvl 10 shields for the Hawkeye MkII (a dollar short of $10 million each I think). The Naginata guns are on Earth I think, and the PowerPlant Upgrade V just in case you have second thoughts about the Balistner.
Oh yeah... bring along a whole bunch of money -- you'll burn through the stuff like it's going out of style. When you're done you'll be a heck of a lot poorer. Hee hee.
Edit: I forgot, this doesn't include the guns. Ha! Have fun scrimping up the dough.
I just realized I make more money in this game than I'll ever see in real life T__T

The Sun research base thing (I forget its name) by Manhatten is a great early credit gathering dog fight place! Go in there with a large cargo hold and a semi decent ship and clean up large... Some Outcasts have hold fill og Cardimine too, so a quick drop off at Manhatten and your in the Money, any Priates caputed off to the prison station...
