using gmax for 3D

Does anyone know if and how we can use gmax to create ships and planet scenery that we see after we landed on the planet?

I think you need to make a .3ds file in Gmax, and then import it into Milkshape 3d and export it in the format that freelancer reads. After that , you'd need to mod some inis and dlls, but I don't know how to do that, maybe someone could continue from here now that I said something.
