O/T - Newer Starlancer-Esque Games?

Hey all,

Still loving Starlancer and progressing pretty far (around mission 16 now, plus beat the demo before playing this). Fantastic game! I really wasn't expecting such a great story or game.

It's been a while since I've played a good space sim. Was a big fan of the Wing Commander series as well as the X-Wing/Tie Fighter games.

I'm wondering though. I've been out of the loop regarding such games for a while, and Starlancer is the only one I currently know of I haven't played through in recent memory. Are there any other good space sims out there that I don't know about yet or that you recommend? (I've heard something about an X2 series but haven't checked it out yet and know little about it.)

Oh, and I'm talking sims here - not stuff like Freelancer, which I am looking forward to playing but consider a different class of game.

Thanks!

I haven't had any experience with the X series. SL is very much like X-Wing vs. Tie-Fighter, etc. The closest and best games to SL that I have seen are the Freespace series. I played Freespace 2 many years ago (a friend had it... Windows 98). It was an excellent game, with better graphics as I recall, and properly scaled capships, etc etc. However, I think it is fairly difficult to get ahold of nowadays. Last time I checked Amazon the only copy they had was selling for nearly $100 US.

I actually have the original FreeSpace, but not the sequel - I'd forgotten about it. I'll have to get that out if it'll still work on XP (should I'd think). As memory serves, I never quite finished it, but it is a good one.

I hope they develop some more games similar to this... They're one of my favorite genres of game, period.

Both FreeSpaces have gone open source, so no need to go buying the game at eBay

BIG download tho...

FS SCP is wonderful, and it's pretty stable now too. the graphics mods make the fan-made campaigns look superb. I play FS SCP almost every evening. You can even play original FS with the SCP, and it looks and plays great. I'm not too keen on the Inferno core-based campaigns though, too much of a change away from classic FS in storyline, concept, and ship design. And I have a lot of trouble with the bugginess of the Inferno mod and the difficulty of the missions (although to be fair the guys do warn you that Inferno missions are hard)

I highly recommend any of the FS SCP campaigns by Blaise Russell, especially Derelict with it's wonderful voice acting, as distinct from the generic computer voices that are used in most of the SCP mods.

still waiting patiently (sorta) for Wing Commander: Saga and Battlestar Galactica: Beyond the Red Line, the total FS conversions.

You might also like the open-source Privateer which is almost completely faithful to original Privateer, but with vastly superior graphics.
