Problem with icons

I guys, Im having a real bad problem with custom icons.
What im doing is im importing pi_elite.3db (the icon) in MilkShape 3D and then I clear the texture, then make a TGA thats 64 by 64 and then take a screenshot of a icon on my desktop and use that, or take a screenshot INGAME. then I paste the new texture in the TGA, then use MS3D to export the new textured icon but it comes out a blurry, brown, white, and black scramble of colors for the icon, or it just doesnt show, then when I scroll down, it turns blank. I mean it.

BLANCO.

Can anyone help?

Why do you try to change the texture via MS3D?
Just take the UTF-editor, open the file, expand the texture tree, export the picture as TGA and change it with Photoshop or something else. Then re-import the texture and save the file.

There are 4 ways to do Icons, 3 of them are explained in this tutorial by Osprey. The fourth (and easiest IMHO) requires the 3DB Exporter by Colin Sanby, Colin has included a couple of ms3d's with the plug-in, one of them is an icon template with it's own .3se settings file.

@ burzelmann, that will leave you with CRC conflicts, if you use the starflier icon and change the TGA you will either see your ship using the starflier icon, or the starflier and your ship using your icon. Option 3 in Osprey's tutorial is the hardest to do but it will stop any CRC conflicts.

I tried with UTF editor and it seriously something wrong with export\import function.

"Read Only" = unchecked?

if UTF editor gives you trouble try closing other apps, reopening it and trying again - if that's not it restart your computer. i have seen it create errors in string entries and mess up imports occasionally, but usually when my computer was hot and running 10 apps at once

broken/corrupted looking texture = wrong TGA format options or a graphics editor that does not handle targa well. you should have 24bit uncompressed selected

He talked about changing a original icon, so I told him this way. I really know that to make new icons you have to use another way. Personally I prefer doing this with the FLModel Cloner.
