ultimate newbie basics tutorial?

hello, it is me, Nomega.... aka

The Ultimate Modding N00B™

i really want to get into modding and making new ships for FL etc. etc., and i have made a few half decent models of new ships in DoGA. However, when it comes to editing .ini files etc., i have about the same amount of understanding as a small shrew....

hence...

i would like to know if there are any ultimately stupidly dumbass tutorials describing the ultimate stupid dumbass basics of .ini files and the like, so that ultimately stupid dumbass n00bs like yours truly can understand them. If so please post a link or any advice etc. is also appreciated

thanks very much

I'm not that good, so bear with me.

1 . Download BiniQDU from the download section.

2. Once you FINISH downloading, extract and yes to the installation things.

3. When program shows a blank screen, click open

4. Locate where your Freelancer is. Usually Crogram Files/Microsoft Games/Freelancer/DATA/SHIPS/shiparch.

Click open on the file and you should be okay by then. Any other questions, pls post. I may be able to help

If you really have problems modding the ships, you could email me with your particular problems. I'll try to help. New ship models would be nice too

save as .ini not .txt also edit the ini file not the backup txt file
example save as weapon equip.ini and not weapon equip.txt
Also if you dont see four options on tabs on the left side like save and save as I wonder if your using bini QDU

First of all...

DO NOT use Note Pad to do your editing of .ini files. Note Pad does not save the file in the right format. Use Word Pad...

Okey, now for the rest of it...

If you are using the GUI Bini.exe you will have problems soon. My experiance was that it worked fine, and then all of a sudden it started giving run time errors.

Use the command line Bini.exe. It's much easier to use once you get used to it.

I made a work directory to hold Bini.exe and the files I was going to edit (.ini.txt), and a sub directory to hold the original .ini files copied from the Freelancer directorys.

Drag the copied .ini file onto the Bini.exe icon and wait for the .ini.txt file to appear. Move the original file to your sub directory.

Open and edit the .ini.txt file with Word Pad.

Save your file when finished.

Rename the .ini.txt file to .ini. The file icon will change to the COG when you answer yes to the "Are you sure" question.

Move your edited .ini file back to the original Freelancer directory and overwrite the file there (you have a back-up in your work sub-directory.

Also, The .ini is now un-compressed so to edit it again just open it up with Word Pad and go at it.

Its really good to see people answering noob questions in here.

Great work guys, keep it up.

Noob Advice: download the recommended programs.
Spend a week browsing through the data folder without changing anything. Get to know where everything is, take a guess at what it does. Do some searches in here when you hit parts you dont understand.

Then start modding.

Your questions will be more to the point afterwards and the answers will mean something to you.

i dont know if this is the right thread for this, but since im a noob i guess ill post it here. id like to mod the ship that you start out with in the MP game. and just for the fun of it i want the new character to start with the eagle. so far i found the nickname to the ship and for the loadouts value there are a few that i can pick from. but the server keeps crashing with the changes. there are 2 values i dont know about and i dont think anyone here has covered them they are
strid_name = 11051
strid_desc = 11551
are these associated anywhere? i cant find those numbers anywhere.
so far this is what i got:

/newcharacter.ini

[Pilot
nickname = trent
body = trent
comm = trent
voice = trent_voice
body.anim = Sc_MLBODY_STND_000LV_A_31
thumb = interface\intro\objects\MULTI_blackdragonmale.3db
comm.anim = Sc_comm_body_unfold_female, Sc_headCOM

[Package
nickname = ge_fighter6 //nick for eagle
strid_name = 11051
strid_desc = 11551
ship = ge_fighter6
loadout = gd_im_ge_fighter6_loadout01 // one of many listed in loadout.ini i just picked one. (though i tried them all)
money = 2000

[Faction
nickname = new_player
rep_group = co_ic_grp
base = Li01_01_Base
Package = ge_fighter6
Pilot = trent

is there something im doing worng or has no one else tried this? cause i havent found a thread on this subject thanks!
