Details on FLrebalance MOD

I've completed the boxed game and have recently downloaded (and loaded) the FLrebalance V3.40 MOD. Maybe I'm being ignorant, but I can't seem to get a handle on the diversity between the powerplant and engine options.

I've read thru the readme file, but it doesn't go into much detail on what features are best for both powerplants and engines, and what combinations work best. In the original game it was obvious that one of the 3 VHF's (sabre, eagle, titan) was strongest along with the advanced thruster, highest level shield (can't remember the name), and a combination of lvl 9 and 10 guns.

But these additions in the Rebalance MOD are a bit mystifying, I would really appreciate any input.

Thanks, John

In this mod, you can chnage your power plant and engine. In the reg game, you could only do this with switching ships. With rebalance, you can change them and keep the ship. A little different, but fun to upgrade like upgrading to better weps.

Welcome to TLR.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried upgrading the powerplant from the standard unit to "Upgrade Powerplant MK1" as it had twice the capacity and regeneration rate numbers.

The good news is that I can fire weapons continuously without losing power. The bad news is that regeneration of the afterburner is EXTREMEMLY slow.

How do I get a better balance?

There are other more powerful versions I believe. There should be 5 sizes.

Yep, the initial powerplant upgrades you can find near liberty have pretty low regeneration rates. You aren't limited to the "upgrade mk" type powerplants, you know. There are also the block series of powerplants, as well as powerplants that come with the ships. Once you get past Liberty space, the variety you can choose from keeps increasing

Sometimes it's worth going to the ship dealer and click on purchase ship but don't actually buy it. When he's showing you the ship and what items to transfer, just look at the ship's powerplant and other stuff. If you like the equipment but not the ship itself, you can buy the ship, then re-buy your previous ship while transferring the powerplant and other goodies you want to keep from the new ship. Make sure you have enough money though.

Note that powerplants take up cargo space -- once I tried to transfer a really nice supercharged block but my new ship couldn't fit it onboard, heh. Also, you can't transfer engines so if you find a place selling one you like (e.g. an upgrade mk 3 or something), then remember that place cause when you buy a new ship you get new engines and can't transfer the old ones, so you have to go re-buy the upgrades. Lastly, if a ship has multiple engines mounted, don't try to upgrade cause if you unmount any of them, you can't re-mount extra engines (the game only allows you to have one).

It's fun hunting around to find the most suitable powerplant your ship can mount

Bear in mind that, like you said, some powerplants generate lots of weapon power, but comparatively little afterburner power, so if you're a LF fan, they're not for you. But, if you fly something like a Sabre...well...that's a different story

Basically, hunt around, try out some different types of powerplant/engine, eventually you'll strike a good balance that will suit you

Thanks to all for the helpful suggestions.

If anyone has any specific examples of good engine/powerplant combinations, that would be a wonderful thing to share ;-)

That's kinda tough, your needs vary from ship to ship as well as gun loadout, plus whatever shield upgrades you have. Basically, any time you can find a much better powerplant, buy it -- usually this is when you leave Liberty space. The mid-to-higher-end powerplants don't really offer differing regen rates, i.e. the better ones also generally offer better regen rates as well, so there's not much debate whether to upgrade or not: if it produces more power, it also tends to regen faster. The mix-and-match problem you are seeing only occurs with the lower-end powerplants.

Also, when you buy a new ship and see a different powerplant, transfer over your previous powerplant but leave it unmounted. Fly around with either one mounted and compare to find out which you like better, then only sell the other one off. You may not have the cargo room to do this in some ships, so you'll have to go with your gut feeling. Of course, in SP you can merely save-reload.
