No problems in demo but retail is pissing me off. EB / Gib?

Having a real big issue and I sure hope someone can explain WTF is going on. I've been playing the marketing beta for a while until retail came out and it played perfectly. No video, sound, MP, etc. issues. So then I get the retail and just like many here, running into a problem. Bad part is it doesn't seem to be one of the more common problems discussed here on the board. So what's my problem? ****y performance when comm traffic is going on.

So to save you from the all to common, "update your drivers, defrag, etc. etc." let me break this down.

Load the same mission in both Marketing beta and retail. No ****y performance in beta, but ****y performance in retail.

Drivers, no. They're updated. Something changed from the beta to retail and now it's causing crappy lag on some folks systems. (I say some since I've seen people discuss the same problems in not only this forum but newsgroups and other forums).

And before someone mentions I did something to my system please re-read this message a bit more clearly.

And my apologies for this anal attitude but I've sat here for the past few days searching the internet for a solution or explanation and can find none (since everyone always seems to blow it off as a driver type issue).

Could it be something involving both versions being installed on the same system? Just a thought - your issue perplexes me from reading it. Only thing I could think of.

already tried. I can take both off, install just beta or retail and still same thing.

Tried deleting the saved games folders after you uninstall?

I'll detail a bit more of what exactly is going on (since I didn't do so in my first post).

When playing the game jer ks every few seconds. It's worse when there is heavy comm traffic but it also does it when viewing the main menu animations and you see the two freighters pass from right to left with the light escort. It's like the game is taking a stutter step to try and get back in formation

There is also a popping noise coming from my sound when this happens.

And I agree, it has me stumped too. I've been fixing games since my C64 days and this one just has me fishing for ideas on what the problem could be. About ready to do a FC on both CD's and see what all files have changed.

EB: Yep. The saves was just something I tried for the hell of it. When uninstalling and reinstalling I started with fresh everything. EDIT: Up to and including removing the my doc\my games\freelancer folder.

Do you by any chance have an ATI video card? The readme mentions that there is a slowdown issue when lots of text is onscreen. In typical microshaft style, however, they do blame it on ATI and mention that maybe ATI will fix the problem in a driver update...

nope, GF3.

Think I may have fixed the problem though for anyone interested. Uninstalled Audigy software and reinstalled with the old (original) audigy CD and used the audigy drivers from last year (not the latest) and my issue has cleared up.

Latest drivers aren't always the greatest.
